JonnieB
if you don't know manila well, it's best to stay at a place right near the restos/shopping/bars as traffic and taxis there are among the worst in the world. if you are looking for girlie bars, then your choices are the burgos street area of makati or the malate/erimita districts on the bay. my choice would be along the bay as lots of variety of hotels in all price categories (but not same price/quality value as bangkok) and lots of decent restos and nightclubs in the area. lots of cafes/karaokes in the area (andriatico street). havana cafe is nice resto and bar. if you want down and dirty free-lance joint, LA Cafe is there. burgos is a farang ghetto with overpriced girlie bars. hotels can be good deals and mandarin oriental and peninsula hotels (good restos) are in the area. also, walking distance to glorietta mall and greenbelt malls with hundreds of restos, bars, movie theatres, and shops. YangYaiEric
Cracking envelopes. Try Mabini Mansions Hotel in the Ermita area; clean, cheap and comfortable. Very near to bars and restuarants. Stayed there many years ago (20+). Dont know if still operating though!
