Good afternoon,

I intend to visit Laos for one or two weeks next month with my private car registered in Thailand. In fact, my private car is in the name of my thai wife who has the thai permit. Does somebody know if we can enter in Laos with a private car and what are the regulations. I was told that is very complicate and that we need to take out a special insurance in Laos, an importation permit, etc etc. If someone had this sort of experience already I would be most grateful to him.

It's relatively easy. I have taken my truck to Laos and Myranmar (not so easy). You will need an International Transit Permit for you car, which is a small passport size book, that you can get from where you registered your car or in Nong Khai if crossing there. All other paperwork only takes a short time at the border. You can buy insurance on the Laos side. This is third party and will not cover your vehicle.

For more details do a Thai Visa search entering "ITP". I did a trial run for you and you should get more than enough answers to your questions. Hope it helps.

I don't believe your chances are very good with a rented car. Did you check this with the rental company? If not, you will not have the necessary paperwork to process the permits, you must have signed permission from the owner, and I just doubt it will be allowed.

I should have combined this with the above post, sorry. I have experience with my own vehicles, but this is just my personal opinion on the rented vehicle. I know in the past you needed written permission to take over rented motorcycles, but now it generally is not allowed at all. Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

You,ll be wasting your time as i can,t see any rental company giving you an International Transit Permit.

Your info is correct, the rental firm say it can be done but is a hassle so they don't allow it.Thanks
