Hi All

I'm looking into providing specialised training in Thailand and I'm looking to hookup with computer schools or even institutions of higher learning.

I have two Qs -

1) Do I need a work permit when I conduct my training in Thailand? These are short courses not longer than a week.

2) I've gotten in touch with one computer training centre but I'm having problems finding more contacts via the Net. Does anyone have a better source. My courses are video related and pertain to training course participants in video editing and visual effecs.

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Conducting a class is WORK and requires a permit,

even if the class is only one hour.

The institution will need to apply for the permit on your behalf.

It depends on how much you want the work.

I ended up telling my employer, a leading US computer manufacturer

that I would no longer conduct classes in Bangkok.

They were not prepared to apply for the Work Permit each time. :o

I cannot help but wonder whether Prof. Joseph Stiglitz and Prof. Robert Mundell, both of whom are Nobel prize winners and both of whom will be speaking in Bangkok in the coming weeks, will have the necessary WPs?

To the eact letter of the law they should and it is possible to get B visa's and short term WP's I am told for conference speakers.

I often wind up the Dr's at work before they speak in conferences in BKK about this :o

AFAIK the answer to the question ^ is yes. I commented before that the process means that apart from signing some papers the individuals probably don't know the details of their immigration/labour status during their visit. In another example, given the auspices under which an event was taking place the paperwork was all handled at an 'official' level, again behind the scenes.

Yes, and also for seminars and training work. I took an interest in this subject earlier this year and Sunbelt gave a detailed answer here.

It is not a full-fledged work permit but a “Necessary and Urgent Work Acknowledgement”, available only for certain types of work being carried out for a maximum of two weeks at a time.

GuitaRoK, this would be the type of “permit” you need. The company where you do the training will have to apply for it for you. There is no government fee for this, according to Sunbelt here.

Astral, it seems this would also be the thing you need. Not your US employer would have to apply for it, but the Thai company where you conduct your training classes. If the company considers it too much hassle, they can hire Sunbelt or somebody to do the running around for them. If they shirk the expense, then it is an insult to you, like saying that your services are not worth that much.
