From today's Nation Newspaper:

Undemocratic' power

The Surayud Chulanont Cabinet's recent approval of a Bt1.8-billion budget to pave the way for the country to adopt nuclear energy has drawn sharp criticism from anti-nuclear activists. Published on November 11, 2007

........

"Why is this government rushing to push for nuclear power and approve a huge budget to promote nuclear, even though it's just an interim government?"

Indeed, why has it rushed --and is still rushing-- for other things as well? I DIDN'T SAY the present powers at be are attempting to do anything that would/will be undemocratic, such as (as a wild example) manipulate election results. I pose this --in French style-- as a question overt-- an open question.

The present Government, which has not been elected by the people but appointed by the generals and thus is not accountable to the people, the opinion of the people or any other control instance, has indeed enacted legislation in several fields, which are unpopular, to say the least.

Such areas are:

- Increase the military budget by over 50%

- Enact the Internal Security Act

- Pushing for nuclear power

etc.

One would think that such important issues should only be enacted after the people in one way or another has been able to express its opinion, through election of a party advocating such issues or through direct votes on the issue. None of this has happened and I seriously doubt that any of these issues would have passed popular approval.

One could say that these are important issues and need to be done, if necessary against the people's will, but isn't that undemocratic?

I think it is undemocratic indeed, and the rush in which these issues have been boxed through the NLA is indeed suspicious. The only hope we have is that the next government, which should be elected in a democratic way, will reverse these decisions.
