Garmin Maps Question

Featured Replies

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Nuvi 350. I would like to have some Bangkok maps and it looks I can choose between ESRI or the Rottweiler Maps. I notice that Garmin now has City Navigator for Thailand on their website (http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynavntThailand.jsp) which is on a SD Card. At the bottom of the webpage it says the data is provided by ESRI. I am wondering if anyone can confirm those maps are the same maps that people are having uploaded to their units for 11000baht in Bangkok. It says the maps are only available in the US...but that price is about a third of the price that people are getting charged in Bangkok.

Also I was wondering if anyone has used both the ESRI maps and the Rottweiler maps and can comment on the which they preferred.

Thanks

I have never seen the ESRI maps because I wasn't willing to pay Gadget Trend 12,000 baht for them. I have talked to guys who do use the ESRI maps and they say there are some glitches. I use the Rotweiler maps and they suit me. They too have some glitches but nothing too serious.

It's interesting that Garmin now offers the ESRI maps. My Street Pilot 2610 uses a CF card so the card they offer wouldn't work in my unit. Since they are selling the loaded card, it's not likely you can use the maps on your home computer. I often find routes on my computer other than what the GPS finds and am able to transfer those routes to the GPS.

Dear all,

I will move to thailand on the 15th of January :-)

I have bought here an Garmin Nuvi 660, and need to buy the Thailand cards for it.

Can any one tell me where I can buy them in ChiangMai? or in Bangkok.

I dont mind if it is a used one.

What is the best I can buy??

There has been offered me a package in Chiang Mai for 11.200 baht?? Is this reasanoble? As I have seen also on the site of Garmin in the states the Navigator software cost 120$ what is much cheaper??

Maybe a stupid question, but are the streets named in English?? because my Thai is not so good yet.

Already thanks for the answers.

I have ESRI on my Garmin Street Pilot and it works very well for Bangkok. I found a couple of minor glitches but for my purposes it really works well.

You have three choices. You can pay 11,000 to 12,000 baht for ESRI, $100.00 to Rotweiler or $119.95 to Garmin for a Thailand card if you are in the USA. If it were me, I'd certainly buy the ESRI Thailand memory card from Garmin.

I bought the Rotweiler Gold package in June shortly after I bought my Garmin 60CSx. I have to say I am impressed by Rotweiler's maps, but I admit, I have nothing else to compare them to since they are the only maps I have used. After traveling around Northern Thailand using the Rotweiler maps, I am quite happy with the value I received for $100 USD -- all maps with lifetime updates.

Since Garmin now sells the ESRI Thailand map, I thought I'd email Gadget Trend and see if anything has changed there. They now sell the 2007/2008 ESRI version for 7,000 baht. Still pretty expensive but better than 12,000 baht. That includes one update and updates after that are 1,500 baht.

I really like my 2610 Street Pilot GPS. I also have Rotweilers gold package but those maps are mostly aimed at the Nuvi GPS units. My Street Pilot has a number of glitches with them. I also have an eTrex Legend CX. The Rotweiler maps work quite well with the eTrex. Maybe I have more money than sense but I went ahead and ordered the Gadget Trend ESRI map. The ESRI maps cannot be used on a PC. Rotweilers maps work perfect on my PC at home so not all is lost. The manager at Gadget Trend was very helpful and is putting the map on a new one gig CF card and sending it to me. The CF card and the map cost me 7,500 baht. He assured me the map would work perfect on my 2610. We'll see if if it does. I emailed Garmin and Garmin told me that there are some differences between how the Nuvi's and the older Street Pilots interpret maps. Their ESRI map is on a Micro card and the Garmin furnished ESRI map will NOT work properly on my Street Pilot. There is no fix available.

On the Rotweiler's website it said that if you have nuvi or some streetpilot you won't be able to do street name searches. Is that true? If you get the SD from Garmin will you be able to do the street name search? Thanks

i bought a Garmin Nuvi 200, and wow - I haven't experienced any glitches, it's spot on. I purchased it in Thailand for 15,000 THB and it came with the Thailand maps in it. I'm still learning how it all works and wonder if I can take it with me when I go to Singapore/Hong Kong. How does it work for maps? You just buy the map on a SD card?

Any website/information you guys might have would be appreciated :o

Street name search on Thai bought ESRI map is very limited.

Cheers

Hopefully the ESRI map will work on my 2610 100 percent as promised. Later this week I should know what the major differences are. I doubt that you will have much luck searching for street names with either of them. Spelling differences even between cities are frequently different. That's where being able to use the map on your home computer is great. My maps are on the memory card but waypoints and routes are on the GPS memory. That means you can transfer waypoints and routes with Rotweiler maps. It's too bad ESRI doesn't see fit to make that available.

Slightly OT (more of at a tangent really):

I've had a Garmin 2720 for around 18 months and have been largely extremely happy with it. A week or so ago, it suddenly wouldn't lock on to any satellites. Sent it off to ESRI (who it seems is responsible for Garmin repairs as well as Thailand maps) on Tuesday this week. Thinking it would be a few weeks at best until I heard anything, I put it to the back of my mind. Anyway, I got a brand new unit delivered from them today, at absolutely no charge (apart from the EMS fee to their office). To top it all, the replacement has the updated map installed (v. 8.0), also at no extra charge.

Without a doubt the promptest customer service I've ever experienced in Thailand. Thumbs-up to ESRI.

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could tell me where I can purchase the Rottweiler maps for my Garmin. From reading this post and researching Garmin's Thailand maps, it would appear that the only way to gt the garmin thailand map was if you were physically in the USA. Do users think that the Rotweiler map is better than the ESRI for street navigation?

Thanks

Try googling "Rottweiler maps" , or "Gadgetrend" or "ESRI Thailand"

The Garmin map is made by ESRI , Gadgetrend are their one of their retailers.

As far as I know only Gary will be able to tell you which is best.

Cheers

Thanks, I found gadget trend, (http://www.gadgetrend.com/gps_map.php) and I see they retail the Thailand street map V8 for 7000 baht which is reasonable.

I couldn't locate the Rottweiler maps even with a google search, only references where it had been used like in the Bangkok Hash House harriers.

On another note do any of these companies supply digital topographic maps that can be uploaded into the etrex?

Rotweiler map is spelled with a single "t". I have two Garmin units. One is an eTrex Legend CX and the other is a 2610 Street Pilot. The Street Pilot has many problems using the Rotweiler map so I paid Gadget Trend 7,000 baht for the ESRI map. It has no glitches and works great. I normally keep the eTrex in my glove box in case I'm too lazy to hook up the 2610 and I happen to get lost. The eTrex works fine with the Rotweiler map but I MUCH prefer the talking 2610 and the bigger screen. The original 128MB card is too small to hold the entire Thailand map so both my units have one GIG cards. Rotweiler would be my preferred map simply because he licenses two units and you can use the map on your PC at home and transfer route and waypoints back and forth between the unit and your PC. ESRI is licensed for a single unit and their map will NOT work on your home PC.

Rotweiler also has Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos maps as well as a number of others included at no extra charge if you want them. All the Rotweiler maps can be used on your PC. I know nothing about topographic maps. You WILL need the Garmin Map Source disk or a similar program to use the Rotweiler maps.

i think you will find you cannot load any other maps into that unit,.

The Nuvi 200 is on sale in the US. Can the ESRI Thailand maps be loaded on the Nuvi 200?

Gadget Trend will load the ESRI map into the Nuvi 200 or most any other Garmin unit. Loading the new map will erase any other map that is in the unit. The better option is to remove the old card and put the new maps on a new card. That way you will be able to change cards to change maps. My eTrex uses a Micro card, the 2610 Street Pilot uses a CF card and I think the Nuvi uses an SD card. You can email the Gadget Trend manager at;

[email protected]

He speaks very good English and was VERY helpful to me. I highly recommend him. He furnished a new one GIG SF card and put the new map on it for me. I put in the new card and everything works perfect. Total cost was 7,500 baht. NOTE - The card will work only for the unit it was purchased for. You must furnish the unit ID number as well as the unit serial number.

There is no problem to load the map (routable with voice prompts - V.8) to nuvi. The price for the map is 7.000,- Baht

It may take couple of days though. :/

I'm guessing that the ESRI Thai maps available from Garmin in the US and the ones sold here aren't the same. Perhaps WRT Thai functionality?

Since both maps come from ESRI, I would guess that they are identical. If you bought the Thailand map from Garmin US and it wouldn't work here in Thailand there would be no reason to buy it and no reason for Garmin to try to sell it.

The advantage of buying the ESRI map here is that you are entitled to one free update and updates after that are 1,500 baht.

As I said, "WRT to Thai functionality". In other words, the one sold in the US would be English-only, while the one sold here would have Thai names. I'm sure they're identical, map-wise, as they both come from ESRI. What I'm thinking about is if a Thai customer were to buy a Nuvi200W and/or the Garmin Thai map from the US, would he have the ability to type in Thai, hear Thai, search Thai names, and see Thai names? It would be relevant for even English speakers, since a lot of the English transliterations of Thai names aren't very accurate or standardised.

You may be right. My ESRI map from Gadget Trend is only in English but the guy who loaded my map knew I wanted English. It's odd that my unit gives a choice of about a dozen different languages but NO Thai language. Garmin gives this message for the Thai map;

For domestic US market only

You've gotta smile!
