Garmin Maps Question

Featured Replies

Most hotels have a farang spelling. For instance, I put in Landmark and it shows me right where it is, Sukhumvit Road, Klong Toei, Bangkok 10110 along with the phone number. Sometimes hotels have the same names, so then I can look at the address and that tells me which one I want. That search works nation wide. I'm afraid that I use mine for a crutch too. I go where it tell me to go and don't watch as I should.

After you learn to use it, there are very few places you can't find. There are several hundred thousand what they call points of interest so you can normally find a point of interest that is close to where you want to go and best of all they use farang spelling. I'm addicted and the reason I have two units is in case the one I am using would have a problem. I get the hand held out of the glove box, turn it on and it knows where I'm at and will always guide me home or wherever else I want to go. Sure beats a compass.

If I remember correctly and apologies if I don't' , Gary took quite a while asking questions about GPS here and was initially very sceptical. I would guess you would have to say he is now the biggest proponent of the Gamin's on this site.

So if an old codger like Gary has been convinced I'm sure everybody else will be if they take the plunge.

Cheers

Gary tongue firmly rested in cheek :D

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. :o I always said that if it had no more information than my road atlas, I could use a compass and didn't need an expensive toy.

I was amazed with the number of dirt roads in my area that show on the GPS. I have found a myriad of short cuts thanks to the GPS and am now a firm believer. They are great gadgets and that's why I have two of them.

I have a Nuvi 200 with the ESRI map, and the street address lookup is just not very easy to work with. ESRI uses a lot of unusual spellings (as Gary A points out above) and at least for me, it has to be input with exactly the "ESRI spelling" or the Nuvi cannot find it. I just use nearby landmarks, and it does find those fairly easily, although the search function can be quite slow, sometimes taking 60 seconds or longer to come up with anything. The other option is to manually find the point on a map, then tell it to go there. All in all, the street function lookup failures are not such a big deal. I still find the Nuvi 200 invaluable and it has paid for itself many times over in the time savings in getting somewhere in the jumble of illogically planned Bangkok streets and sois. I've even learned new short cuts from it.

There is however an interesting drawback: simply mindlessly following the map and audio directions creates sort of a crutch and I don't find myself actually learning how to get to a place. I once went out without the Nuvi in the car and had a difficult time finding a place that I had driven to three times before, just because I had been listening to the Nuvi and not really paying any attention to how I was getting there.

A friend of mine is morning over here from the USA. He bought us each a nuvi 200 but only purchased one esri map. Can the map be copied to another sd card?

No. The ESRI map can be used only for the GPS unit it was purchased for. Each unit has a unit ID number that must match the password for the map. Rotweiler will allow you to own two devices and will give you passwords for each of them.

Add in that the Rotweiler website has some unlocked maps (i.e. Bangkok and Chiang Mai), so that if you know you only need a map for a single city, it doesn't need to be one of the 2 GPSs that you have set up.

Personally, I have the GPS more for helping me out when I find I've gone through a junction in the wrong lane, or trying an alternative route around the traffic. Or for places where I'm going for the first time, where I'll sometimes look them up on Google Earth first, and sometimes just enter the name into the Nuvi - works very well for hotel names in English, not so hot for Thai names as you don't know the spelling used.

I have also used the trick of finding it on the map on the PC, and placing a marker, then copying that to the "favorites" on the GPS.

Ok I got the Streetpilot c330 and the thai esri map sent from the USA. I can see that the Thai map is in the unit, but i cannot get the unit to acquire any satellites here. It just sits there forever and eventually asks if i am in Kansas!!! I have tried master reset but still no luck

If you are indoors the unit cannot see the satellites. Certain times of the day I can sit by a window and get a signal. Tall buildings also block the signal. If your car has metallic tinted windows, that causes problems too.

I was outside with no huge buildings near. Still no luck

Unfortunately it sounds like you have a defective GPS. Even an older unit should acquire the satellites within a couple of minutes.

After a period of not finding satellites it will ask if you have moved hundreds of KM's since you last used it. You need to answer yes.

Also when you say outside , were you outside but in a car?

Some of the films on cars screens block the signal, try it outside with nothing overhead (trees , car roof etc) on a clear sunny day (they sometimes don't work if its cloudy or hazy.

Cheers

Unfortunately it does not ask! It just asks if I am in Kansas. I have tried it outside in an open field. My friend, who also lives here in Bangkok, has the same issue. He bought both units in the USA and brought them here when he moved, so we have two Streetpilot c330 with two Thailand esri maps, and neither unit can find satellites. It is as if it is seeking satellites in the USA

I'd take the unit to Gadget Trend in Bangkok to have it checked. Apparently you didn't buy the unit or the map in Thailand, so I have no idea how they will react to checking it for you. It's possible that they would repair your unit. I have a Garmin eTrex and a 2610 Street pilot. The 2610 has the ESRI map and the eTrex has the Rotweiler map. Both units will find the satellites even without maps installed so I think the problem is with the GPS itself.

I had a similar problem with my Garmin 2720 being unable to lock-on. After updating the firmware via the Garmin website to the latest release (think it was Jan 08), it fixed the problem. Not only that but it now locks-on quicker than ever before.

Aside from that I managed to find a fudge to get it to work before I considered updating:

First of all make sure it's not on inside mode! :o

Once that's done, turn on the unit in test mode (on the 2720 that's done by holding down the Menu key while turning it on). Let it run the tests for about a minute then turn off the unit and turn it back on without holding any other buttons.

Instead of seeing "Acquiring Satellites", you should see "Locating Satellites", and if you look at the GPS page, the satellites should be numbered sequentially from 01 and up, rather than specific satellites only (eg 03, 05, 09, 15 etc).

You should start to see the satellites lock-on - but slower than normal. After a couple of minutes the unit will (should) work as normal.

This fudge worked without fail on the 2720, but you had to do it every time you turned the unit on, so was a bit of a pain.

Hopefully there's a firmware update for your model by now (the problem is well documented online by tons of people but not by Garmin!)

I finally figure it out. Had to do a master reset,, not a regular reset. It cleared out the memory so it no longer looked for satellites in Kansas! Now it works fine!!

Garmin Street Pilot C330 and ESRI Version 8 maps.

I just brought over two Garmin C330 from the states. I purchased them for about $130 US. I then purchased on Ebay 2 ESRI maps for $100 each. They are the Garmin part number and work really well. My friend just used his around KK and loved it. Other than trying to figure out how to get the Garmin to link to the local sats they work real well.

I just got a new Garmin 60 CSX. Got it today. It took about 3 minutes to lock in the first time, and now it takes about 10 seconds. It even works (slower) in my house. This is why i got this model. I hear that the X at the end of the model no. means it is the new technology that can see the satellites much easier through trees, big buildings and sometimes even concrete (somwhat)

Anyway, having 3 GPS units prior to this one, i am quite impressed so far.

Now to try to get some Rottweiler maps in there.

  • 3 weeks later...

Rotweiler wins,(on cost), but garmin are now blocking it's use on Mapsource and subsequently transfer to GPSr, You must get only version 6137..no later

Only problem with Rotweiler, it won't route the wrong way up a one way street, I have requested a mod. Does show all the bars though.

I have used Rotweiler maps fpr over a year now. The best thing about them is that it is only $100 USD and they are always updating them. You can download the updates for free and there are other countrie's maps to download as well. You also can install it on mapsource instead of buying a SD Card (or having ESRI install it directly to your GPS). This way you have a ma on your computer for reference. They also allow you two unlocks if you have more then one GPS. I have no affiliatin with this company I am just trying to save people the headaches I got while looking for Thailand and Cambodian maps on the internet.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I usually am!! :o ) but I think the Rotweiller maps are just a collection of open source maps that other people took the time to compile/scan etc, they are all availalbe on the net and free. All rotweiller did was put them in a bundle, locked them and then charged people for the privelage of using them. This is why you 'donate' to them and not buy the maps.

I think they have got a cheek and remind me of the companys that re-package freeware/shareware as commercial products (dvdshrink springs to mind)

According to posts on some hacking forums.. The Rottwieller maps were the basic ERSI v7 maps, stolen and hacked, then relocked and charged for..

I asked a couple of gentle polite questions to rotwieller guy about expanding his map solutions to use WinCE machines (with me doing the work) and got blunt rude answers.. No way I was doing business with that attitude.

scumbags! even worse than I thought.

Actually, I've been meaning to contact you livinlos. I've compiled an ini file for tvxb to download a 5 day epg. It's a conbination of true and starhub (Singapore). Although it has the occasional error, it works pretty well. Do you want a copy?

Have a look at this site: http://www.garminator.com/city-navigator-t...CFQaT1Qod8kRkLA

Something doesn't seem right if these maps are supposed to be locked to a particular unit. :o

Any comments?

Yes, normally the maps are locked to a specific unit and will only work with that unit. Here is another link that most likely is selling copies;

The latest ESRI Thailand map is v8.1.

Just copy the zipped file onto an SD card and insert in your Garmin, No need for Mapsource or unlocking, Work fine.

Empty SD card, Create folder GARMIN insert zipped File in it, It is already unlocked and will work directly from there no problems.

Found all this out tonight while trying to sort mates Bargain Nuvi 310 from Tesco that only comes with THAI MAPS :D You can change the Language to English and Text, but when you use the Garmin all roads and writing on maps are in Thai, so even when you search for a place only Thai Language comes up :D But allsorted now, New Thai 8.1 loaded and working fine, Loaded the Full Asia Map too as a trial, that works fine too !! Well here anyway :o But shows all the other country maps loaded, so sure will be fine in other countries too!! Amazing how all these Guys find all these unlocks and solutions !! Worked for my mate though !! Just wish i had known when i spent 11000 Baht on original software from ESRI then another 7000 (New Price) with my new Nuvi 770 :D

It is fairly easy to unlock them to a Different unit or Particular SD Card, There are cracks and ways round it easily available

I have used the Rottwieller maps, they are great but where i live still miss out some of the lanes etc. I have also recently got a copy of the garmin maps on sd card and put them into my gps. Managed to get them off ebay for about $80. Had no probs with either.

Easily available off the internet for free, Just install on SD card and off you go, Thailand, Asia, Just about anywhere for free !! And yes they work, Already Tried Thailand ones, Work on SD card so you dont have to mess with what is installed on your Garmin, also Garmin XT, works on Mobile Phones, already tried that too, up and working fine on a Samsung Omnia
