Can someone tell me why DNS lookup in Thailand is so broken? It doesn't seem to matter which ISP you use, its crap. If you manually point to a server that is working, it might work for a few weeks before it craps out too. What is the problem? It's meant to be a distributed system right? So why is it so hard to find one that WORKS?? Doesn't ANYONE get it right? Is it really that hard?

Argh!!!

OpenDNS - Thanks for the heads up. Was avoiding it for some reason (can't remember why), but since changing a moment ago Wikipedia is now accessible.

Using True btw.

Anyone can provide a DNS service.  Its a phone book for the internet, you type in a name it looks up the real address in IP form and sends you there, That way a web site can keep the name but change providers and you never knew they moved.  ISP provide DNS service, but normal not as many and well up to date as a service like Open DNS which provides the sevice to web site providers.  Their interrest in the addresses is more keen.  Look up the method of changing your DNS for the OS you are using.  Sometimes people think its a work around the system it is not they still can see everything you do and record it if they like.  Its just the internet yellow pages in fact some linux dns server software uses the yp in the name and it stands for yellow pages.  I use open dns a server and an au and one in jp.  Somebodies always home.  Open DNS also as one of the best parent control systems they know whats porn and whats not you can sign up for it at the open DNS web site. edit forgot to mention yes dial up services use DNS all web browsing uses a Domain Name Server to contect you to the site you type the name of. As a result if you know the IP address in number form you could type it in and get the same site., but the numbers may change if the site moves but the name can be the same, so you still get there using the name.

Knowing the IP address is no way a solution either, because loads and loads of hosting services bind many domain name to one IP, so if the website you try to access (like google) is on dedicated server indeed the IP address will work otherwise it will more likely fail.

OpenDNS, HomeDns (like having a small Linux server acting as a DNS server in your network) are far more elegant and interesting solutions :o indeed !

I know using the number form is not normal, if it did work it would change soon, just tring  to explain the relationship it has to the name and reason for using DNS.
