Why Do Western People Use The Word "farang"?

That there is nothing wrong with the word farang. Right?

Right. The word itself is neutral, not an insult.

It can be and is often used as an insult though. Another poster said same as any other word. I reject that. No, much more than most words.

Also, like I said, I see a strong tendency of Thai people to continue to use it to describe individuals when they already know much more specific information about that person such as their specific ethnicity/nationality. I think this does suggest a flavor of racism. I accept that many people would not see any racism in that. I do. It is a debatable point. Finding racism in Thai society does not surprise or shock me, all countries have it.

OK, now?

Look, why don’t you all get it into your heads once and for all that “Farang” is a neutral, non-offensive word. It simply means a person with blond hair, blue eyes, white skin, who speaks English, has lots of money and comes from…er…the Democratic Republic of Farangland.

It’s just like the word “Paki” – a non-offensive abbreviation of the word “Pakistani”. Or “Niga” – a neutral shortening of the word “Negro”. And who could possibly be offended by words like this? And after all, they’re only words and words can’t possibly make you feel angry or upset.

I have also mentioned the "I love Farang" stickers which imply that Farang means English speaking.

2. I just don't agree with your argument that the Thai taxi signs imply that farang refers to English speaking 'white people'.

I was told that Taxi drivers had to pass an exam in English Language to be able to put an “I Love Farang” sticker in the window and what it was saying was the taxi driver speaks English. So my conclusion here was that the word Farang was being used to mean “Anglophone” or an “English Speaking Person”. So this definition of Farang would exclude Albanians, Bulgarians, Italians, etc. but include Singaporeans and many Indians.

Have I go this wrong?

Yes. While all Anglophones are English speakers, not all English speakers are Anglophones. Anglophones are those whose native or mother tongue is English. There are literally hundreds of millions of people who speak English and yet are not Anglophones. To use one example, the Dutch are not Anglophones, yet a very high percentage of that population speaks English, often very well indeed. As I pointed out earlier, English has become a lingua franca spoken by people the world over. I would hazard that the percentage of Europeans vacationing here that speak at least basic English would be quite high, and they would be using that knowledge as they travel around Asia. A Bulgarian, a Swede, etc. would not expect to find Thais speaking their language, although there are undoubtedly some who do so. They would expect that they can get by here in English if they don't stray too far off the beaten track, and even if they do they are likely to find someone who know's a little. Those stickers are directed primarily at 'farang' tourists and designed to make them feel comfortable. It is for that reason, and that reason only that those signs appear in English, which is the language the majority of [western, white, European, caucasian] tourists understand. Interpreting this program as 'excluding' Albanians, Bulgarians, and other farangs is just plain silly. If anyone is excluded it would be those who are 'non-white', i.e. not farang. But having said that, I would be very surprised to find out that TAT doesn't have different programs aimed at the Chinese and other populations. Frankly, I don't see what the issue is here.

For the record, I don't mind the I heart farang stickers but have you noticed that they mean nothing, you take a taxi with such a sticker and he usually doesn't speak English anyway? I do see them as saying they speak English and that is a neutral message (don't believe them).

Now I would start to worry if we see stickers showing farangs hanging by nooses ...

This is a case where the use of this word is useful and meaningful. Calling your Irish husband who you have been married to ten years, my farang husband, now what is that about?

No, it is not at all exclusively used for persons with blond hair, blue eyes, English speaking, or money. It simply means someone with 'white' skin in the sense of their being European. You got 4 out of 5 parameters wrong, you also don't understand what an Anglophone is....I could go on, but I think it is time for you and Jingthing to throw in the towel on this one.

Jingthing to throw in the towel on this one.

Excuse me, sir, but I have said farang is a neutral word many times. It is a neutral word that happens to be often used as an insult. Chiding people to stop arguing is not a valid argument especially odious when you have backed off from engaging me directly.

Q, also I agree with you in general farang refers to European descent white people, but I think it is fair to interpret the I heart farang marketing oriented stickers as a (deceptive) welcome map to a wider group, English speakers in general. For example if I was an English speaking Indian I think I would feel welcomed linguistically by such a sticker.

You have a said a lot of things here, that is only one of them. I am not going to waste my time looking up your previous posts here as I have already addressed them.

The program is only deceptive in that many of those drivers hardly speak English. So we agree on that, break out the beer. Other than that I don't see it as being designed to exclude anyone who isn't an Anglophone as another poster here seems to think.

Right. The word itself is neutral, not an insult.

It can be and is often used as an insult though. Another poster said same as any other word. I reject that. No, much more than most words. So you insist the word has derogatory meaning? I tell it has not. For example, like a knife, you can use it to cut meat. But it can also be used to kill or attack. It depends FULLY on the intention of the user. I emphasize : FULLY.

I said I agreed. They use it more when it is a farang but not as much when it is an asian. And there are a few very subtle reasons in my opinion which even the thais I think won't realize it themselves. First most thais have never travelled really far away from their villages or country, and they also aren't really very well educated in terms of geography. So if you have mentioned thet you are from Norway or Finland or whatever, they probably forget it immediately or have no idea where that is. So you remained being called farang which is what comes to their mind the quickest. Now also, compared to other Asians, your(farang's) outlook is much much different from theirs, which is similar to the thais, therefore they have to specify those Asians in order to seperate them from the thais but for you farangs they do not need to. Just say farang and everyone knows who they are talking about. In fact, the word is quite often even used to show friendliness, dearness(na rak), which is why some thai colleagues don't use it for fearing that the farang might feel offended. But once they trust this particular farang, they know he won't get offended and will feel more free to use it.

Racist? Of course thais are racist, no one is denying this. But not this time about the word "farang". And I am not a thai apologist. I am just calling a spade a spade.

You think too much, Jingthing. There must be some sort of conspiracy going on, eh!

OK, now?

You just can't switch to another culture, can you?

It is different and if you cannot understand why, there is nothing I can do to help you. Keep feeling offended and maybe ask your government to declare war to thailand since all 60 million people are offensive to you countrymen.

No I don't insist. The word is neutral. It can and quite often is used as an insult. Simple as that. We agree.

Meemiathai, I appreciate your other words, they were persuasive. What you basically said, most Thais just don't know so much about the greater world, is how I see it mostly too.

OK, M, I think most farangs have indeed experienced being insulted with the word farang based on the context and tone of the comment or overheard comment though.

Yes but that is because those being insulted are in fact "farangs", that is why they hear the word farang.

Let's say if 100 farangs come to thailand and all had an argument with the thais, they will all be insulted hearing the word farang. Doesn't automatically mean the word has become an offensive one. The same if 100 farangs came and get on very well with the thais and get praised a lot, similarly the word won't automatically become a compliment. Can you see it?

Mee, I think you don't understand me, sorry. I can see it. The word itself is not offensive. BTW, you don't have to be in an argument to have the word farang used about you in an insulting way, though. I see your point that the word can also be used in a positive way, doesn't make it a positive. It is a neutral word that is loaded enough to be used in many ways.

So I have been asked to “throw in the towel” by another member so am happy to do just that after making a concluding comment.

My original question was more of a semantic than cultural one. I was not asking whether we find the word “Farang” offensive. I was asking why we adopt it when it does not seem to have a very clear meaning.

This discussion has confirmed my suspicions and so henceforth I shall not use the word “farang”. I shall use the following more precise words:

1 “Caucasion” meaning caucasion (It’s hard to define this word using skin colour because so many Europeans have darker skin than many Asians)

2 “Anglophone” meaning native English speaker

3 “English Speaker” meaning someone who speaks English (whether or not their first language)

4 “Westerner” meaning someone from a Western country (they may be of any linguistic or racial group)

“Farang”, of course, can be used to mean any of the above.

Phew, glad to get that sorted out.

Thanks everyone.

:o Just saw this one.

One thing no one is going to deny here is that, thailand compared to western countries, is still a less developed one and education of average citizen is no comparison to the west. But I don't think this really has much to do with the usage of the word "farang". In their mind they simply just will never have thought it would be offensive to call a farang a farang. So haven't I until I came to this forum. But I do understand why now. Maybe because I was educated in HK and have more ability to understand western mentality.

I think I will start using it more.

Like when ordering a Coke, I will say bring me the farang soda.

What do you want for dinner? Farang food, what could be more clear? I am sure a pizza on a hamburger bun in a fondue pot would fit the bill, just as long as there is LOTS of cream sauce, can't be farang food without cream sauce, don't you know?

If someone dares call me a septic tank, no, foul, I am a farang, and proud!

Here's a toast to Woody Allen and the Nazi war criminal, farang brothers ...

To avoid further hissy fits from Jingthing the 'We love Farang' signs shall be changed to the following.

We love people from all over, including but not exclusive to people from the following places.(please note that we have left a url which when typed in to a browser will show more information about the country, if pre-booking a taxi then please inform us of your nationality so that we can insure the driver knows at least the basics, ie. Language, population, current political sittuation, life expectancy, GDP etc) :) Have a good day.

To avoid further hissy fits from Jingthing the 'We love Farang' signs

Huh? What hissy fit about the signs? I never had a problem with them. You really don't like me, do you? Don't hold back.

Me:

For the record, I don't mind the I heart farang stickers

It looks to me as if the OP is making up meanings for the word and usages and inferences.

In the long term catagorising people by the way they look cannot be healthy as it generates an "Us and Them" thing.

However when it come to being PC the Thais like most people on this web site are a bit behind the times and unclear of the meaning so it can be reasonably assumed that the word in general terms is not intended to be derogatory....and as the OP exemplifies this is not always obvious to those saddled with this nomenclature.

Why do we use the word 'farang'? Many explanations have already been given. If you were to say to me "There are a lot of foreigners in Bangkok", my reply would be "Yes and most of them are Thai!" If you were to say to me "There are a lot of farang in Bangkok", I would probably say "There's too many!" So if I am talking about foreigners, I am referring to non-British citizens, farang is non-Thai but mainly Western culture.

Many have commented on 'It's the way it is said' but equally It depends on your mood as well. If someone calls you a farang - grow a tougher skin or call them Khon Laos!

'They know my name but still call me a farang?' I know my son-in-law's parents well and know their names but I sometimes call them Taff and Blodwyn, I have also been known to call them 'Welsh <deleted>' to their face. I call my Scottish friends Paddy or Mick and Irish friends Jock, they normally retaliate by calling me a very, very offensive name beginning with 's'. So what?

I did ask a question earlier in this thread which has remained unanswered - How many times in your everyday life have you used the word 'Caucasian'?

I use it a lot because I spend a lot of time in Singapore. There they have a slang word for caucasions: "Ang Mo". However it is has been lovingly adopted by the Caucasion community in the way that "Farang" has in Thailand. So both Singaporeans and Westerners, tend to us the word "Caucasian".

I have to say I prefer it. Seems more precise, more meaningful, more respectful. But hey, that's just me.

I can tell you that your interpretation of the word 'farang' is completely and utterly incorrect. Farang in and off itself is a neutral word. It can indeed be used negatively by those who are not happy with farangs, but so can any word. The vast, vast majority of Thais that I know and interact with do not attach the stigma you feel it has to the word.

Second this. Accurate comment.
