JR Texas Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Maybe this is not suitable for TF and children under the age of 10, but I need a good acoustic guitar to go with my Cowboy hat. My significant other Thai female (the one with the mother-in-law from hel_l), decided to give my guitar to her brother. He sold it! I like Takamine, Gibson, Martin........can't find a good used one in Thailand. I am in China at the moment but will be back in LOS soon. Maybe there is a well-known place in Bangkok that sells used guitars and has a very large selection. The only place I know of is on the second floor of Pantip Plaza.......nice selection, but the last time I was there I could not find the brands I like. If you have a good lead, post here or drop me a line using TFs internal message system. Thanks........HOPE ALL YALLL HAD A GREAT LOI KRATONG.......MISSED IT (MISSED THANKSGIVING TOO)
kmart Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Just grab a free one hanging out of the back of any pickup heading South from Bangkok before the weekend. May need some tuning.
lazeeboy Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 you could try 2nd floor panthip plaza ,the second hand shop ,normally got some second hand one's in there.
Cobalt60 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Siam Discovery I think its called, same mall that Outback is in, second or third floor. Nice looking shop full of mainly guitars.

sgunn65 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 My friend is selling a lovely 12 string Takemine in Bangkok. PM me for details If you want a 6 string I just bought a Martin 40% off in the Mall Bangkapi. They have a reasonable selection of Martins (also some very nice Crafters from Canada) there all discounted. Mine was reduced from 52,000 to 33,000 and those are genuine reductions as I checked the world wide prices for Martins

I play a 6 string acoustic guitar......mostly Dylan and Springsteen stuff..........with a bit of SRV. Keep on picking.........except if you are Thai as you are picking the wrong thing
chinthee Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Well, I don't know what kind of SRV you're going to do on an acoustic. I think you need a hopped up Strat for that! I have some. Dylan is cool. His new CD is awesome. Best stuff he's done in decades. * Also, if you love Dylan, you'll absolutely love this new kid, M. Ward. Listen to his "Chinese Translation" on youtube. Vintage new age Dylan.

Vintage new age Dylan. If you play guitar, a big challenge is to try to play SRV using an acoustic guitar. Of course, nobody can......maybe Buddy Guy. But it is fun. I like Riviera Paradise and Lenny and Life by the Drop (SRV did use an acoustic guitar for this one). There is also a music video you can download of SRV doing an "unplugged" thing playing Texas Flood, among others. I just slow some of them down. Dylan is great........nobody can touch him. Watching "No Direction Home" now.......wonderful. I have not heard Dylan's new CD......will have to check it out. Never heard of M. Ward.......will have to check him out. I think I will skip the Chinese translations.........
kyb789 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 I've been checking out guitars also, but the brands all around Thailand seem to be unheard of to me. Those big names we see in the U.S.,just are not here. I guess the Thai's just don't go around buyin Les Paul Customs, so all you see in the stores are cheap imitations. As for acoustics, what brands do you recommend under the 10kbaht price.?...stick to the names you see around Bangkok please...Great, Crafter... etc. I would really like to know what is good other than Yamaha (not saything they are good, just only well known name I've seen before).

I am a sucker for stuff like that. But most importantly the tone is a beaut as you would expect from Martin. The OP who was asking about sub 10K guitars I tried a couple of Carafters and they were very nice. With the 35% being offered in Bang Kapi (and in MBK I saw today) you should get something nice

I think it is the best guitar Martin ever made......wonderful sound quality.
Dakhar Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 I envy you guys. I am afraid I will go to my grave with the regret I never learned to play the guitar. I hope my son does though.
candoman89 Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 There are (were?) a couple of shops in World Trade Center on the 2nd or 3rd floor near the north end selling new acoustic guitars for less than 10K. Bought my daughter one (6 string Takamine) with case for less than around 8K I believe and it sounds great and has an internal pick-up (it is now in my possession ) :D

If you want the good guitars you need to go down to chinatown, or basement of fortune, or across from pantip, or look in a guitar magazine at the classified section. Yamaha guitars really suck if they're not the ones made in japan, don't bother with them.
technocracy Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Dylan is great........nobody can touch him. You never heard ole Johnny Winter put some balls into Highway 61 Revisited? I don't think Dylan plays it since Johnny did his version!
billwo0 Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I need a good acoustic guitar to go with my Cowboy hat. PM me if interested in a Taylor "Big Baby" guitar. It's 15/16th. full size, steel string. Great sound. thanks, Bill

The only things Edgar has done worth mentioning is Tobacco Road and Frankenstein (also is a scientologist!) . .. . Johnny got wise early and split to do some partying! Naaaa sorry imo Edgar ain't nothing on Johnny . . . Johnny defined Texas blues guitar and is considered by most as the best slide guitar player ever (including the legendary Duane Allman .. ) which ain't bad for a crossed eye blind albino! Look on YouTube for his Mean Town Blues performance at woodstock or his Highway 61 at Dylan's birthday party as just two examples.
sgunn65 Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 If anyone out there is looking to sell a top end dreadnought like the D28 or a Santa Cruz or Gibson please get in touch with me.
MrSnrang Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Today I took my Tele to get its action reset. There's a shop at the ratchatewi bts station. Plenty of secondhand fender and gibson guitars. They had decent prices as well.

sgunn65 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Thats just the question I was about to ask. Instead I shall go down there today and see for myself. I will report back. Maybe there is a J45 or J50 with my name on it!!!!! In the meantime JR Texas, any news on the D28 your mate was thinking of selling?
Fred Sanford Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 there are 2 stores in pantip. the 2nd is closeby that one you're talking about and has better prices

I got a D18 that I paid Singapore dollars 2500 5 years ago in Singapore. Chose that over the D28 because they are better for lead bluegrass picking over the D28 which is a deeper more full sound, Not to say I would not love a D18 though which at the time was Sing 3000 dollars. jaidam Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Those of us with cash in GBP or Euros, there are some excellent deals on guitars in the US. The weak dollar has made the cheap US guitars even cheaper. Looking at some 2nd hand Martins online I can see some late 60s and 70s Martin D-18s for around 60,000 baht. Although not a collectable era for Martins I rate them better than recent Martins. The bracing on the newer ones is way too heavy. Pick up a 70s or older Martin and it feels almost half the weight and much better sound. IMO they had to strengthen up the build to more easily honour the lifetime warranty. Notice on lots of older Martins the top has pulled up behind the bridge ( sometimes so much that a neck reset is needed), but what a great sound. Also some of the 60s Epiphone guitars are good value. Last time I was over in the US I picked up a '64 Epiphone Cortez for just under 300 dollars. About 10,000 baht for a 60s Gibson acoustic out of the Kalamazoo factory. Bargain!
