Does anyone know of any shops in either Chiang Mai or Bangkok that don't gouge on pricing? I wanted to add some additional firewire ports to my computer and discovered, at least in Chiang Mai, the vendors want 1200 to 1400 baht for 3 connector board . I can new 4 port firewire boards outside Thailand for 280 baht delivered. The problem is the vendors won't ship to Thailand so it would have to go to the US first and then back to Thailand which costs time and money. The duty on components is 0% so the markup is just pure unadulterated price gouging. I notice all the shops refer to a printed price sheet from a wholesaler to determine pricing. Does on family control all computer component vendors in Thailand? If anyone knows of a vendor that doesn't gouge I would appreciate knowing who and where they are.

Yeah ok, it's an internal port the 4. one!

But anyway you can't compare the eBay prices with Shop prices and I wouldn't buy from eBay anyway. To much fraut!

You might also check some of the online shops for parts mentioned in Tywais's post here, but Reimar's price looks lower than most shops.

I haven't noticed 4 port cards here either.

I've been an Ebay member since 1996. Rarely do I encounter fraud particularly when a vendor has a high positive feedback score. The vendor in question is pushing 10,000 positive. Comparing shop prices, there is no reason to mark up goods 500% except for the lack of market competition.

Just look around at the various component stores. There are plenty that will sell these things for around 400-500 baht. I recently bought one myself. You just need to go to a fairly big IT place and shop around.

I'll probably have to get a friend in Bangkok to check for me. In Pantip Chiang Mai there does not appear to be a vendor offering those prices. Everyone here opens what appears to be the same book and the range has been 1200 baht to 1400 baht.

Check here for reviews of the different cards. My strategy is only buy machines with FireWire included already.

Thanks for the link. I have one port already but need at least one more otherwise I will be constantly climbing under my desk and switching from 4 pin to six pin.

In that case, one other option is to get a FireWire hub rather than a card in case that might be of use.

I tried that option. Can't even find a hub in CM. No seems to know what I am talking about. Firewire cards are not common here either. I suspect there is are manufacturers of both the cards and hubs here in Thailand. I am surprised they are so uncommon at least with the local vendors.

You could probably find firewire hubs in Mac shops, but they would of course cost quite a bit.

Strange that CM wouldn't have these things, as they're not that hard to find in the IT centers. Several years ago, it would have been hard to find (and the reason why I got one from the US at that time), but not now.
