Learning Thai

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just discovered a website that teaches thai and it is a free service. Has anyone used this and, if so, has it been useful?

Website is www.learningthai.com

Thank you

:o

Hi, I think it's a pretty neat site....lots of stuff for reading, writing and listening Thai. The biggest drawback to it and other sites/Cds are there is no one listening to you! For me pronunciation has been a real trial. I did quite a bit of self study....but I was saying so many things wrong. Now I have a teacher and for me that has made all the difference. IMHO if you are a beginner it is crucial to have a teacher or a gifted Thai friend to help you get the pronunciation down. Otherwise you may think you are speaking well but in reality saying it completely wrong. Good luck and don't get discouraged.

Agree.

Learning Thai and learning Martial Arts: you want to have good teachers.

Otherwise you will be on the wrong groove and it will take major effort to undo the wrong stuff to relearn the right stuff.

I did have a German guy teaching me Thai but he was more interested in teaching me grammar rather than actual sentences. So I di learn quite a few words - just didn't know how to put it all together. I do try and speak Thai but often I am not understood even though I could swear that I am saying it correctly. I will perservere though but not easy when the Thai people I know have different dialects.

Learning Thai from a German? No wonder nodody can understand you. Anyway, if he was teaching you grammar, you should be able to form sentences; I'd guess he was teaching you vocabulary, instead...

I feel for you 'Samuiclaudia'! You made do with what you've got.

Wish you the best!

If you are in Samui as your name implies, you will now learn from locals which is the best way to do.
