December 28, 200223 yr Hi, After being happily married to my Thai wife for a few years she is now expecting our first baby. I am a British citizen with a 1-year Thai resident visa living in Samui and she is obviously Thai. Can anybody give me some advice as to what citizenship our baby would get or what advantages or disadvantages taking one or the other citizenship would have. I believe the baby can only take one citizenship and not dual nationality. I already have the marriage and birth registration forms from the British Embassy, but I can not get any more advice. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
December 28, 200223 yr The child can have dual citizenship. There are obvious benefits in the Brit citizenship. Register the birth with both the Brits and the Thai Authorities asap. You can then apply for both passports whenever. You shouldn't have any probs Good Luck Pat
February 9, 200323 yr Can the child keep his dual nationality all his live ? Or does he have to select one later on (when 18 years old) ?
February 9, 200323 yr Both can be kept forever based on current UK and Thai law. Changes could occur in the future../.register the birth with both.
February 9, 200323 yr Dr Patpong, Just to make sure I have it right. You say that dual nationality is permitted under Thai law. Can you point me to the legal article which states that?
February 11, 200323 yr Rather than confuse you with the regulatory info be assured both countries will deal with it as a birth right
February 15, 200323 yr I don't know where to find a legal article, but my child has both a Thai passport and a U.S. passport. Check with your embassy; they should be able to answer any questions you have. Chuck
