a friend contacted me today and this is the conversation we had on skype:

Char says: You konw about Tsunami gossip?

Char says: 23-26 dec.07

Donna says: what!!!!

Donna says: who says this?

Donna says: some monk?

Char says: no, from internet and my friend inform.

Donna says: who can predict a tsunami? thats crazy

Char says: like a Shaman

Donna says: crazy

Donna says: do you believe it

Char says: 50/50 beware!!!!!

Donna says: oh god. well you are just as crazy

whats THAT about? how can anyone predict a tsunami? perhaps they mean a LANDSLIDE in the election?

it disturbs me that such rumours are circulated and even more so that people actually take them seriously.

I remember similar rumors a few months after the tsunami -- there were ones circulating that a tsunami was going to hit Samui on a certain date-- then there were ones circulating that there was going to be another one in Phuket on a certain date.

Some people are just stupid, and the ones who start the rumors just sick.

I wouldn't say they are stupid or sick. I think that's a little strong. We all know that superstition plays a big part in Thai culture. Thai people are always talking to me about fortune tellers, lucky numbers, things not to say, gods to pay respect to (even though they are Buddhist), etc.

The fact is, if this monk can predict Tsunamis, why didn't he speak up before the last one and save thousands of lives? This sort of gossip will always be around in Thailand, personally I just ignore it.

I don't support rumours but I came across this a few weeks back.
