Re-importing Applications W/ Customs?

Hi Everyone,

Having spoken to DHL, I realize that even multi-national companies in Thailand are susceptable to the sabai-sabai attitude that just makes them not quite as efficient as they should be!

My problem is that I need to ship out an electronic underwater photography flash (strobe) to the USA for repair - www.ikelite.com - & have it shipped back WITHOUT an import duty/tax. This is apparently called re-importing! I even have ikelite's DHL number for charging direct to DHL, but as for the taxes during re-importing after it's fixed, it just seems no one from DumbHL seems to really know what needs to be done...even though they will handle the re-import forms?!

I've been told by DbHL that I need to go down to RamaIV's customs office (www.customs.co.th) to apply for re-import of the item....but that's about all they could tell me, plus that it will take a couple, few, or God knows how many days (depending on whom you talk to....) b4 it will be approved??

Does anyone here have any real life experience on this?

How long does approval take?

What documentation do i need to apply?

Where is the office??

...couldn't find it on their website! Can only laugh at that after searching!

Is there any cost?

Any other info needed?

My facts are that Ikelite just shipped it to me, packed it badly (so it got damaged by DHL from USA in shipping) & is willing to have it couriered there & back to BKK to check it for free.

I had similar issues (broken items sent in arrived damaged, sending items for repair, etc) in high value home theater gear.

I tried everything.. Even went to customs locally before sending it.. They simply refused to have any leeway on it (10000 USD item retaxed !!! at 37+ %) and I suspect DHL are caught in the trap of being squeezed by customs outside of thier control.

In the end I flew the item back in in hand luggage.

What you need to do is that you'll need the product itself to the Custom and apply for a re-import License.

You can do this at Main Custom Office at Rama IV Road or ath the Custom office at Suvarnabhumi Cargo Terminal. May you send the product direct to the service and let them send back on the same way. This may works more easy but to use DHL or so!

To claim exemption from import taxes you will need a licence, i exported a set of leather for a car to the uk, it was wrong so i had it sent back ( to country of origin ) .i tried til i was blue in the face that this was a returning item from thailand, made no difference and the duty i had to pay worked out at about 50 per cent of declared value.dhl wont commit as when your goods arrive they couldnt care less what it is or where it came from as its been imported you will pay taxes,.

That's true in your case!

But in the case of the OP there's a Repair Service, even maybe under warranty. For to proceed you need to show the product, if possible with documentation (Invoice/Bill, Warranty Documents etc.) to the custom and apply for the Re-Import Permit. You'll need to keep a full set of all documents for the Re-Import and best is you even keep the Name and Rank of the Custom Officer which is handling the case for later more easy procedure.

I wouldn't use DHL or an other Forwarder to avoid problems and handle the whole things by myself. I also would bring the Goods to the Custome at Suvarnabhumi Cargo Terminal and ship directly after the paper ready. We done this several times for my company without problems. But as Company you need an Export/Import License which you didn't need as private person for Repair Services.

You can do this at Main Custom Office at Rama IV Road

Could someone give a intersection w/ Rama IV for this office ...or perhaps their address please?

May you send the product direct to the service and let them send back on the same way.

Does this mean that they have a parcel mailing service at the Customs office too? I was going to use DHL coz I already have it paid for (going & returning) through them, but also because i need this thing back quickly.

The quickest way is to bring it to Suvarnabhumi Cargo Terminal and and if you take your DHL paper with you you should be able to send it directly after presenting it to the custom!

If I where you I wouldn't use DHL but send by myself!

Rama IV at Klong Toi need min. 1-2 weeks more for out and back in!
