report back in a year when you've watched everything on NGC, discovery & movie channels etc :o

Good for the footie, though.

OK Paying THB 83.00 a day is THB 2,490 a month and 29,880 a year!

Report after the first year again please! :o

There aren't any other legal choices. It's easy to be smug enjoying stolen goods - and it's cheap!

At least have a decency to admit it.

Whether or not you like UBC depends on what you like to watch and how much you're willing to spend.

I pay 1600 for the Gold pkg and 3 HBO channels. There's a new movie on every 2-3 days.

There are new sports each week which I watch.

The news (CNN, BBC, CNBC) changes (although not often enough).

There are some channels which have some TV series.

And of course History Channel & Discovery.

I still get cable TV as well so I have plenty of choice.

Gold package is about the price of a beer a day .. except I don't drink. I've had UBC for years .. and don't work for UBC. Why will you rip off a signal then laugh at people who pay the honest price?

Unlike a lot of people, i have no problem with the product. For me, it's great for the football. As far as there being lots of repeats is concerned, isn't that the same with most cable TV? Besides, i don't need 24 hours of fresh new programming as i don't watch TV that much.

The problem i do have with UBC is the way the company is run. Hopeless. I'm sure the fact that they have a monopoly with virtually no competition has a lot to do with their shoddy service. They really don't care what you think and make little effort to disguise that fact.

UBC is UBC, the price is the price, it will work for some and not for others. BHT 1500 a month is a lot of money for some and nothing for others. It seems steep "for Thailand" but who cares - try getting EPL games in Europe. It really all depends. However, there are no legal alternatives and so it's a take-it-or-leave-it thing.

I got it only for my better half, she wants to watch Ophra, I can afford BHT 1500 a month and get to watch the odd premiership game. Is it a great deal? No. But it works for us.

I can't be bothered with the illegal offerings, the time and effort wasted in keeping them running is just not worth it. I have seen some setups that work pretty well but I've never liked people who charge money for pirated software and feel the same about TV.

My only concern with UBC is the poor quality of their signal. It's about time to update to HDTV, actually it was about time five years ago.

For them it should be very easy - just sell new boxes to people who have HD compatible TV sets. There could be a problem with broadcasting both HD and normal signals at the same time but they have access to all Thai satellites, nothing they can't work out.

I'm in Samui and have no complaints about the picture quality. I used to live in a place where there was a constant LOW SIGNAL bar at the top of the screen. Then they trimmed the growth from in front of the dish and no more problems.

While I'd agree that Hi Def would be nice, the first thing they should do is start broadcasting in standard def. At the moment the resolution of their programs is just 520x 576 versus the PAL standard of 720x576. The lowered horizontal resolution really makes for crappy picture quality on larger TVs. Then there is the fact that the bandwidth allocated per channel is very small causing ugly macro blocking and other nasty artefacts. The bandwidth allocated to audio is also inadequate causing bad sound and they even use mono on some of the music channels???

While I am raving has anyone else noticed the distorted sound on Discovery Science. It is clearly an overloaded amp somewhere in the signal path causing nasty distortion and over modulation. It's been like that since the channel was introduced. They actually run the English audio on both the Thai and English audio channel. The audio on the Thai channel is fine. That a professional broadcast organisation can miss this for three or four months is ridiculous.

UBC or should I say True, is a low quality, unprofessional service charging for high quality professional service. It's a sad joke and if I had a choice I'd change to another service in a flash!

It's plenty good enough for me. The alternative would be 7 channels of Thai soaps, over a TV antennae with a lot of noise and grainy pictures. No englsih movies, no international news, no 6 or 7 documentary channels. I do not care about sports.

So I am happy. I get to see a movie now and then, keep up to date on world events, and can watch Mythbusters on Discovery and Top Gear on BBC world.

My only wish would be more flexibility in channel choice...ie, ellect away sports and get more movie channels f.ex...

Any idea when Top Gear is on? My on-screen program info for BBC never seems accurate, which means i often miss my favourites like Talking Movies and Top Gear.

You can download Top Gear off torrents, in better quality than UBC, and it's not illegal, afaik.

While competition sounds like a good idea, the market is too small even for two companies. Hypothetically speaking, do you think you could start UBC competitor and buy the same HBO/EPL programs and broadcast through the same satellites for less? Do you think you could provide better customer service for less? Where would you FIND your customers in the first place? It took UBC ten years to build a customer base that allows them to break even, and that was with a total monopoly, do you really think you could just barge in and do better?

They have tried competition already, btw - UBC was formed when two competing satellite TV companies merged to save themselves from bankrupcy.

im with UBC Platinum simply for its EPL telecast. i can get to watch my favourite team almost every week.

Channels such as AXN, HBO, i think UBC has no control over what is showing as it is not scheduled by them.

Its a high price to pay for the Platinum package but i will pay just to watch my team play.

some years ago, i checked their prices. I was basically interested in discovery/animal planet/nat.geo and maybe some news. They offered 1200 thb, as the 3 channels are only in the most expensive package. The 1200 is now 1500.

I contacted the malaysia satellite TV which have options on packages, such as the "sport package" or the information, news, movie etc. packages. In my case, a movie and a information package would have translated into 550 thb/month. something like 17 channels. All the ones i wanted. But unfortunately, ubc has monopoly over the thai skies. It was not offered here....

Still without ubc and happy as ever :-)

With respect, what nonsense. How anyway can argue in favour of less or no competition, on the basis that you think the market is too small. As Pattaya Pete so eloquently put it, the market is only made small because of woeful marketing and non-existent customer service.

I am definately one of the naysayers who encourage people to break free of this overpriced monopoly and I often offer advice and know how in pm's as to how to obtain superior quality programming using torrents available from quality websites. I think if you can afford to throw good money at a bad service then all the better for you but by my reckoning, if you pay for an adsl service, why not get the very most out of it or do most people only use it to browse the web and before someone brickbats me about the legalities, may I suggest that they check to see how transparent their glass house is before throwing stones at mine...... never met a person yet who has not obtained something, somewhere which was not counterfeited or copied.

JAF

Happy to be free of UBC but still awaiting my deposit back though.........surprise surprise

First I don't rip off a signal... I have a sling blade in the usa and a good connection over here. Second, I access the shows I want to watch on the web more than the sling blade. I was IN LOVE with UBC when I first got it. I was starving for anything with a decent plot and when UBC showed up I was blissed out for about three months which wasn't long enough as I signed a year contract. ANY food to a starving man will taste like the Holiday Inn brunch on Sunday. So it is with you. There are MANY legal options to get your dose. UBC is the easiest but ultimately the most unsatisfying choice. I eat well, with scifi channel, USA, CBS, NBC, and many others. I subscribe to in2streams.com for my shows and have NEVER looked back.. I have what I need and am thrilled that I don't have to subsidize what is by far the worst lineup in any country I have been to, to date. That being said... I paid eighty five dollars a month for quality cable in the USA and would pay it here if I had that choice, so if UBC cleans up their act I might consider taking it back. The ONLY plus I see is the subtitles but seeing my wife speaks English this only kept family members here watching tv all the time.. now quiet bliss and Stargate Atlantis.

I looked at the in2streams site. Where exactly do you get your reliable 1.5Mbit connection from? I've been thinking about the slinbox too, but half the time my connection can't even keep up with a youtube video so I doubt it will be able to handle slingbox... And is this in2streams legal?

I did consider other options. But I concluded there was too much 'ducking and diving ' involved.

I pay 100 baht for one bottled alcoholic drink in Walking street.

I get all the platinum channels on a daily basis for 83 baht.

And yes I will report back in a year regards my view of UBC.

it all depends on your needs... I save many times the cost by tuning into CNBC and bloomberg and making good investment decisions. Jeeze I can justify the cost in one day. Also when the girlfriend drops by she is mesmerized by the music video stations.. Everything else is gravy.... Your mileage may vary?

I get my internet access from TTand T and have been very happy with their upgrade .. I do know the secret and there is one so that I get the solid connection they are talking about. The problem is .. is that if I talked about it here many others would implement my changes and I will have to compete for the access. Yes yes I know its selfish but I have the access I have always dreamed about now and don't want to mess it up. I know others have this info as well and dont talk about it but anyway... in2streams seems to be legal or they profess to be... I think its more like they are operating in a gray undefined legal area but so many internet companies are these days.
