I am posting this for a friend. He currently has about 60 hectares (375 rai) that he is looking to bring into corn production for next year. He finished testing this year and got good results. He expects to get about 300 tons next year.

He says the local market in Cambodia is terrible. According to him, while international prices have doubled over the past few years, the extortionists in Cambodia aren't passing that increase along to the locals. (I have no personal assessment about this.) The farm is located only about 70 km from the border crossing at Prum/Pong Nam Ron near Chantaburi.

Is anyone familiar with the procedures required to import corn into Thailand, and who he could contact regarding what varieties they would be most interested in purchasing next year? From what I have read, the Joint Economic Cooperation Strategy means that imports of corn should be duty free. Cambodia doesn't have export restrictions or tariffs on corn from what I am told.

Also, can anyone tell me what the prices are for feed corn in Thailand right now?

He also knows of several other Khmer corn growers in the region, so if there is an economic benefit to be found in doing this, there could be reasonable volumes.

Thanks for any information.
