I'm wondering what the best choice for fast-growing shade trees would be for a residential site up north. Soil is just so-so. Looking for something that won't produce problems with roots or "stuff" that might drop off.

True fast-growing fruit trees would be a plus.

Hi Klikster,

Check this post out. I have 5 Taw kobe fruit trees now & they produce shade very quick!

And have a very flavorful berry that is sweet & fruity. We grew 1 large one & 2 small ones to start. They grow in the woods. We paid for the first 3 & now people are giving them to us for free. within 2 months you have a lot of shade. ^ months you have a ton. It is true the birds love them , so Do not park your cycle or truck-car under the trees!

We went from zero shade to yen sabai. They do like to be watered & pruned every now & then. Here is the link, if it doesn't work it is on the 2nd farming page under Those Red Berry Trees

I believe they grow throughout Thailand. Have not had any luck from seed yet, but I just started experimenting with them!

they have a nice texture to the leaf & smell good as well. Ours grow ell in compact soil.so they will do well in just about any soil!

This sounds just what I need to grow around my pond. Does it shed a lot of leaves?

From what I can tell so far not many leaves fall, since it is not a seasonal tree(that I am aware of) I do not see many leaves fall except when you originally transplant & prune back the branches to increase the mass & Productivity. The Birds will probably eat the berries if you or the kids don't. They are not to messy.

But really be careful about parking or putting any vehicle or garden chairs with hardened paint(enamel Or even Lacquer based as the bird poo will burn a circular looking divot in your once beautiful paint job. & if you do not like the sound of chittering birds this could be a factor.

I myself love the outdoor sounds of nature & find their happy tune a pleasant + in the garden- house area!

I have been toying with getting 2 more larger Thaw Kobe's to shade the west facing of our house as it could drop the ambient temperature way down as the sun is from 3pm - setting. They love water a pond would be home to them 3 we got from pond areas & only had one small plant die on us.they are cheap 100-500 baht depending on size & if you have a Thai girl she could mingle her way to freebie land as mine has. People seem to be real helpful on common trees that are abundant.

Cheers

Thanks Beardog

We are going up to Roi-Et over the new year, so I will ask around. Bird crap on the cars won't be a problem as the parking area will be the other side of the house, and, like you,I enjoy the sound of our little feathered friends.
