Tot Adsl / Linksys Wireless Internet

After hours of head banging I finally managed to get my linksys wireless router working with my TOT ADSL modem. Thanks to this forum I learnt that both modem and router had the same IP address and by changing the routers IP address my problems were solved and I was at last able to connect to the internet via wireless.

Now I have a new problem..well my neighbour does ..he is able to connect and get a good signal from my protected wireless but is still unable to get onto the net using internet explorer.

Has anybody else had a similar problem that hey have resolved or have any idea as to what this might be...could it be my linksys security settings or is the problem with his PC?

Will try and put this right in the morning..have thought about restoring advanced settings on his PC for explorer, checking firewalls and checking DHCP is assigned but this problem is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack for me!

Would appreciate any other help or advice anybody could give.

Thank you.

There could be different reasons...

First, get your neighbor's machine into your apartment, set it next to your computer, and see if it connects. If it connects fine then your neighbor's signal may be too weak. Don't trust the signal strength indicators - they are often totally incorrect. E.g. showing 5 bars when you in fact have too weak a signal to connect.

Once it's there, and still doesn't connect, check the other things:

- Right click on his wireless connection icon in the system tray and select "repair". Often fixes connection problems.

- Is the wireless connected?

- Is it set to DHCP?

- Does it get an IP address from the DHCP server? You can check the latter by opening a command prompt and typing "ipconfig" - that shows you the IP address of the computer, it should be similar to what your own computer shows except with a different last digit. If you machine is 192.168.1.100, the neighbor will get 192.168.1.101 or .102 or something like that.

This is not in the firewall or IE options, you can leave those alone.

Many thanks for your help nikster,

A question about DCHP-I have assumed that this is what my ISP(TOT) use to allow me access to the internet and this is the method that I have entered on the linksys setup pages. I have connected to the internet on my PC using wireless from my neighbours property so assume that this must me the correct access method and in theory at least if it lets me in it should let him in.However I have read that many DSL internet providers use PPOE which requires a user id and password. Before trying wireless for myself TOT set me up via their modem to a admin password on an IP address .On entering this password I then go to another password screen/box which has my own id and personal password already saved. However I do not need to hit the apply tab here so I'm not sure what relevance this has.I simply connect to the internet by typing in an address on the address bar. I overrode the password boxes by simply changing my prefferred home page from TOT's IP. address on internet options to a search engine and this goes straight into the internet without the need to enter any passwords.Am I therefore able to assume that TOT operate an "open line"(DHCP) and the password boxes are not necessary...or maybe something is still working in the background somewhere when I make a direct connection to the internet? I have looked at the labyrinth of TOT setup pages and can see PPOE showing on a couple of parametres screens even though I have to confess I don't know what those parametres/connections even mean or what I'm really looking at.

I would add that before trying linksys a friend tryed his wireless D-Link router/modem thereby not needing TOT's modem on my TOT connection

and I was able to access with no problems. We simply just had to plug the thing in and connect without the need for any input parametres or passwords. This was set to an unprotected open network however.I assume from this that TOT must be open access but none the less I am still confused about the orginal password screens that TOT gave me and the mention of PPOE on their setup pages.

Aplogies if some of my terminology and understanding might sound like dribble but having never used wireless before(my last use was good old fashioned dial up!)my knowledge is to say the least somewhat limited on this.

If you have any thoughts on this I would be very grateful.
