December 22, 200718 yr hi not sure where to post this, but here goes having been a regular visitor over the years,i'm heading to bkk next year for about 6 months. have a bit of a half baked notion in my head that i might try learn TM. (i heard they do classes at Wat Po). is this doable for a male farang?.would they (or some other school) have the facility to teach an english speaker.? or would i be seen as a dodgy sleazeball?(some say i already am!). regards antojik
December 22, 200718 yr every larger massage shop do run teaching courses - the advantage is one to one tuition instead of 5 - 15 students in the group. The best is to find a good therapist (you can as for a recommendation from your guesthouse or massage shop) and learn from them, it would be cheaper if you arrange learning directly rather than paying 50% to the shop owner. See the teaching materials before the course, to directly to the teacher to find out language and teaching skills
December 23, 200718 yr There are several places in Chiang Mai. Well advertised in the tourist brochures there. They also provide some kind of certificate for completing a course.
December 23, 200718 yr A falang friend of mine recently did a course at Wat Po, he was very pleased with it and said the cost was around 6,200Baht
December 23, 200718 yr Wat Po for sure. They (Wat Po) are recognised both in and out of Thailand. Thais who are genuinely proud of being in the profession attend Wat Po for upgrading even equate it as a second chance in life (gaining a qualification that for whatever reason was not available to them earlier in life).
December 23, 200718 yr no, the most professional thai massage course is the governmentaly run scholl of thai massage in Nonthaburi (north of bangkok) where education takes up to 800h (the learning is modular 60h +150h + 350h + 240h and takes over 1 year - as the course starts when there is a minimum students in the class). the style is different that of wat pho, more difficult to learn. Lessons are only in thai. The school is backed by the government and thai can get a placement in the proffession all around the world. The full qualification gives the right to open a proper massage school - so no 10% backhand to the cops, as the owners of the less legitimate massage schools have to do.
