I want my wife to learn more about computers and using the internet. She is not showing much interest. And I think part of the problem is my selfish me. Wenever she sits down by it, and try to figure things out, I am hovering about, making her feel self concious, as she is practically computer illiterate.

We only have one computer, an all singing, all dancing will make you toast and coffee fro breakfast thingy, with all the bells and whistles. So I am thinking about getting a laptop that she can use. And then I can take that with me when I am off on some work assignment.

Anyway, we do not need the latest and shinyest. Just something capable of getting online with, that can play music, and do some browsing, e-mail and voice chatting using MSN or skype.

So any models I should look for that are cheap but relibale and would fit the above?

And what would it cost me?

ALso price and recomendation for a wireless router. Have not seen any yet here so have no clue what they cost.

Finally, she is a good student and likes to read and learn stuff on her own, if nobody is pushing her. So I figured a book like Computers for Dummies and Internet for dummies would be great. Anyone know if they exist in Thai? Or simmillar?

Thanks in advance

Hi Gimbo,

Check out Zeer Rangsit computer shopping centre in Bangkok for many low priced laptops, you may want to check out Se-Ed book stores (try Tesco Lotus/Big C supermarkets) I am sure I have seen them at Se-Ed, internet/computers for dummies in Thai and at good prices. Good luck.

Thanks, but I forgot to mention I am far out in the sticks, and not planning any trips to Bangkok. So all I need to now is what to look for, not where to look. Basically to give me an idea how much cash I need for this when I go to buy one.

Anyway, you would be hard pressed to find a reall high end computer for sale out here, as people cant afford it, so most are in the lower price bracket, so I just wonder what cheapo laptop to get really :D

It is her b-day Jan. 1st, so that may be a good time/ excuse to get her one :o

You'll get a new Acer or Toshiba for app. THB 20,000 and an Modem/Router for app.  THB 2,500 and that's all you need!

I would go for the Acer because of the Service if some problems occours. Acer is expanding in Thailand and the biggest NB Dealer too!

I use an Acer for myself as well and I'm happy with it!

Thanks. My desktop is an Acer, and I like that one a lot. 20000 may be a bit over what I have in mind to spend. But the price of a router is good news, was expecting more.

But well, if I cant find anything cheaper that is also a good enough then I can always pay that....just have to ahem....circumvent the truth about what I actually paid for it, since we got the new desktop acer only 2 weeks ago, he he....

You might look at the ASUS eee PC if you haven't considered it yet, runs around 11-12K. There's a thread running on it now.

The Asus eeePC is to much limited! That machine is for real temporary use only IMHO because of the limited memory/Storage, size of the monitor and others not to mention the speed for the new software! And it's for sure NOT a computer for learning!

I had tested the machine and directly forget about it because of it's overall limitations!

By the way, the cheapest Acer Laptop is around THB 18,000! But if you buy an Desktop PC you will get one for about THB 12,000! Last one with better spec as an Laptop! May you consider that as well!

Sorry, but I disagree in respect to what the OP wants it for.

Thanks again...looked at the Asus Eee thread and yeah, that is not what we need. A second desktop is out, as I will need a laptop for travel. I work overseas. But you are right, more bang for the buck with a desktop, which is why I got us this one when my old laptop took it's last breath 2 weeks ago...

I'will see what I can find. Have a trip to Surin coming up between x-mas and the new year.

Reimar, thanks for the help. I will use the price of a an Acer laptop as a benchmark price, and see what kind of deal we can get. And I can use it as a specs reference once I am in the shop and see what models they actually have.

True, but the Asus Eee 8" screen and small storage capabuility kills it. Would want to load a lot of music and she is into photography, so there would be a lot of pictures on it as well. So we need something with a real hardisk.

I realize now you are looking for something that covers your travel/work requirements also and as such understand why the eee is out. But just to clarify something, a USB external disk drive works fine. I have a mini 120GB drive for those requirements. I also have a wireless link between my eee and my main computer allowing me to use all the disk resources of the main one including streaming video to my Plasma TV. It makes for a great 'appliance' but as a workhorse computer, agree that it isn't the choice for you. :o

the EEE PC would satisfy some of us who have an extensive amount of knowledge on what a pc can deliver and what we don't need of it at times. some of us need something really small and handy such as the EEE PC just to work as Tywais mentioned, "fill in the gaps!". Full fledge laptops and desktops are undeniably difficult to live without though.

An EEE PC would totally satisfy me on the bed just before i doze off, on my table outside while i attend to customers, a little youtube video to kill time etc etc etc. Its really a "fill in the gap" thing when you don't really require a PC with ferrari specs.

The OP is better off getting something below 20K and really you can get a router (wi-fi) for about 1k nowdays. G rating. Look at IT Asia latest brochure.
