TAT organizes Tsunami remembrance ceremony

Director of the Southern Office District 4 of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Suwalai Pinpradap (สุวลัย ปิ่นประดับ) revealed that the office has joined hands with Phuket provincial authorities to organize a ceremony in remembrance of the 2004 Tsunami disaster.

The ceremony entitled “Light Up Phuket” will take place on 3 separate beaches including Kamala (กมลา) beach and Patong (ป่าตอง) beach. All 3 beaches will have ceremonies performed in various religious faiths and 3 kilometer plots of beach will be sectioned off for the placement of candles.

Patong beach will feature a photo exhibition of the incident with a focus on the rescue and triumph of survivors and also child impressions of the disaster.

We went down to the beach to participate in the services which generally worked out fine - I don't believe however that had anything to do with TAT since I am convinced they are incapable of organizing anything, but that is a slightly off topic. I was disappointed to see how local sellers are capitalizing on the event by selling anything and everything Tsunami/memorial related at high prices - cum figh's for 200 baht, candles at 50 baht and loads of strange young men wandering around with plastic buckets inviting folks to donate to something or other. I kinda think that despite it being only three years on the Tsunami has joined the ranks of being just another Thai money making event - sad.
