Bullfrogs - does anyone have any information of raising bullfrogs? A friend of mind just came back from Cambodia and said some farmers there were raising them and making good profits. On his next trip to Cambodia I plan to have him get the details.

Hi Bubba,

We have looked into raising these frogs in some depth & plan construction of concrete rearing tanks in the new year. We have quite a lot of literature on the subject (all in Thai) & have visited a couple of farms etc. In short, frogs take up much less room than fish, eat considerably less & grow very fast, there is a strong demand for the finished product which sells at 60-80 baht per kilo. A breeding pair of these frogs can be quite expensive, the farms will only sell the young frogs in batches of 5000-plus. 5000 of the critters will apparantly thrive in a 3 by 4 metre concrete tank, eating the pelleted feed developed for raising Cat fish (pla duk). We are actually going to have one of our fish pools filled in & the frog tanks are going on top. Will report on results. PM me & I'll hunt out the literature.

Fruity: will be interesting to hear you experience. Are the frogs the North American native? If so are you sure you can feed fish pellets to adults? I use to catch and stock ponds with bullfrogs back in the US. They migrate if not enclosed, eat their young if hungary (always hungary) ate only live food, (mate for life???) Subject to dease if overstocked etc. I think that China may have some success in this vinture. Slapout

I don't now the species, but there is a local one down here that is big. At full stretch about 12" from nose to tips of hind legs. Our Burmese labourer often catches them, delicious in a curry. The Tadpoles are about thumbsized on an adult. The vietnamese are farming this species I believe. Try a search on Thai Frog.
