Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with common assault and affray, Merseyside Police said today. The 25-year-old was one of three people arrested in Liverpool in the early hours of yesterday following an incident in Church Street, in the city centre.

Barton, from Widnes, Cheshire, remains in custody and will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court today alongside two others charged in connection with the same incident.

Andrew Barton, 19, from Widnes, has been charged with actual bodily harm and affray and has been released on bail. Nadine Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside, is charged with common assault and affray and released on bail.

What a great role model Joey is. Everyone makes mistakes, but Joey boy continues to find himself in the <deleted> everywhere he goes.

So my candidate for Moron of the year is none other than Joey Barton.

I think he may be getting a spell on remand, if there is reasonable evidence, as yes, he is on bail at present. Complete Tool.

The England midfielder was one of three people arrested

Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton has appeared in a Liverpool court accused of assault.

The footballer, 25, who faces charges of common assault and affray, was refused bail when he appeared before magistrates in Liverpool.

He was arrested with two other people on Thursday following an incident on Church Street in the city.

If you've watched Barton's performances lately, then I think it's a good thing for Newcastle that he's locked up.

Result ...Litta can't get a game for Reading and although he may well be able to "Score" as many times as he wishes off the pitch , he has not managed one goal all season on it.

Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton has been remanded in custody charged with assault.

The 25-year-old is accused of common assault and affray and appeared before Liverpool magistrates following an incident in the city's Church Street.

He was arrested on Thursday with his brother Andrew, 19, and Nadine Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside.

The player will reappear on 3 January and misses Newcastle's matches against Chelsea and Manchester City.

The court was told that Barton and a group of friends were allegedly involved a row with another group inside a McDonald's restaurant at 0530 GMT on Thursday.

Mr Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, was remanded in custody by magistrate Carol Myers.

The case is due back before the same court on 3 January, when Mr Barton is expected to appear again.

A spokesman for Newcastle United said the club was not making any comment about the hearing.

Mr Barton's brother, Andrew, 19, of Widnes, is charged with actual bodily harm and affray.

Ms Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside, is charged with common assault and affray.

Both are on bail and are due to appear before magistrates in January.
