I doubt the above advise is correct.

It is my understanding that it is the responsibility of the employer to register the employees with the local Social Security Office.

Am I mistaken?

Maybe we're not talking about the same thing but I went to my local state hospital and was registered by them and given a patient card without having to show my passport or any sort of documentation (I'm on tourist visas).

Been to see the doctor several times over the last 18 months with no questions asked. Free consultation but have to pay for drugs (I'm diabetic).

Might be because this is in an out of the way location with, as far as I'm aware, only 3 farang in the area so they're not exactly overrun by us.

If you are working in Thailand, your employer should register you,pay the health contribution, you then register to the hospital and have access to the services.

I don't know(not my case)if the medications are free or if you have to pay, partially or totally for them.

If you are self employed you pay your contribution to the Health Service and have your card accordingly.

If a member of your family works for the government as a teacher, soldier, police, etc.you are entitled to use the benefits of his/her insurance.(for parents, spouse and children only)

Please feel free to correct me if I said something stupid,it's only my personal experience. :o
