No End In Sight As South Thai Rebellion Enters Fifth Year

Thanks, your points are well taken and difficult to dispute. There are a lot of monied people behind the scenes and they are the true danger. I think poverty is an issue because it is the place where it's easiest to recruit the young fools as suicide bombers etc. In most western countries it's now too difficult to get those young, uneducated folks in to do the bombing so it's the wealthier more affluent who perform these duties. I guess the point is, we have to watch out on all fronts.

Again thanks.

Thanks for your response, Scott.

Please consider... we are witnessing the biggest transfer of wealth in history due to petro-dollars being transfered from the West, India and China to oil producing nations - the majority of which are in the MidEast. Sure, this wealth is not distributed evenly, but richer those countries are without a doubt.

As you acknowledged, it is difficult to find young uneducated suicide bombers in the West, so the more affluent but still religiously devout perform these acts. Why do you conclude that if wealth was more evenly distributed in MidEast countries, more affluent and religiously devout people wouldn't perform these acts, just as they do in the West?

sorry Scott, but reports of yet another teacher killed...

Insurgents kill a local school teacher in Pattani; 12 injured in Narathiwat bombing

Pattani - A gunman riding pillion on a motorbike shot and killed a local school teacher at in Yaring district, while in nearby Narathiwat, a bomb exploded at a local outdoor market, injuring 12 people.

Akom Suwanawong, 57, a resident of Pattani's Tambon Sabarang, was shot dead at close range while riding his motorbike to the school this morning. Police said the attackers made off with Akom's 9mm handgun.

Meanwhile, Narathiwat police were going through the closed circuit video to look for suspects who may have placed the bomb at the outdoor market Thursday.

Eleven of the injured have been released from the hospital yesterday afternoon after receiving minor treatment. The attack came amid claims of limited success by the authorities, pointing to the drop of the number of attacks.

In 2007, more than 100 public schools came under arson attacks. But in 2008, up to now, only ten schools have been attacked.

But analysts said using the decline in the number of attacks was misleading because a number of attacks over the recent months have been much more deadly and intense, inflicting serious casualties.

While intelligence appeared to have been improved somewhat, the drop on attacks on public schools did not reflect on the working of the state security apparatus, whose policy remained largely the same as previous years.

One killed, 17 wounded in Southern insurgent attacks

PATTANI, July 31 (TNA) – A school teacher was shot dead while 17 persons were wounded in a bomb explosion in two separate incidents in the troubled southern provinces of Pattani and Narathiwat early Thursday.

A 53-year-old teacher was shot dead while he was driving a motorcycle to school in Pattani's Yarang district Thursday morning. Police said they believed unidentified gunmen followed his motorcycle and shot him enroute before escaping.

Another incident took place at a market in the Narathiwat provincial seat when a five-kilogramme bomb hidden inside a black motorcycle was detonated by a cell phone, police said.

Police said 17 persons, including a six-month-old infant girl and a 70-year-old man, were wounded by the blast. Several motorcycles parked nearby were also damaged.

Witnesses said they saw a teenager drive the black motorcycle and park it near the market early this morning. The identified teenager then mingled with people who were shopping before the bomb exploded.

Some 3,500 people have been killed in the two provinces and nearby Yala province since renewed violence broke out in the region early in 2004.

The ideological basis and method of land grabs, as in the Thai South:

Ishaq:365/Tabari VII:94 “Muhammad bin Maslamah said, ‘O Messenger, we shall have to tell lies.’ ‘Say what you like,’ Prophet Muhammad replied. ‘You are absolved, free to say whatever you must.’”

Qur’an 9:3 “And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the Pilgrimage is that Allah and His Messenger dissolve treaty obligations with the Pagans.”

Tabari VIII:182 “Allah had enabled Muhammad to take the persons of the Quraysh by force, giving him power over them so they were his booty. Their lives were now his spoil.”

Bukhari:V9B84N59 “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.” Whoever says this will save his property and his life from me.’”

Tabari IX:69 “Killing disbelievers is a small matter to us.”

Tabari VIII:141 “The battle cry of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah that night was: ‘Kill! Kill! Kill!’”

Qur’an 2:191 “And kill them wherever you find and catch them. Drive them out from where they have turned you out; for Al-Fitnah (polytheism, disbelief, etc) is worse than slaughter.”

Ishaq:327 “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.’”

Chefheat: I don't know that the solution is equitable distribution of wealth, but I think it would reduce the number of people interested in fanatacism. When I lived/worked in the Middle East, one of the things that struck me in some places was the huge family size, the relative poverty and the fact that there is absolutely nothing for a lot of them to do. They then get gov'ts and religious people who spew a constant hatred for the West and it's evil ways, while never taking a look at their own country/culture.

Once some of these folks get some goals and dreams and get a life, I think the numbers will be reduced.

Make no mistake, there are will always be the extremists and neither wealth nor poverty will deter them (Bin Laden is from a wealthy family). Vigilence is still required.

Finally, what I am talking about only addresses the social situation for some of these folks. There are a lot of other things that need to be addressed.

On another note, sorry to see another teacher get killed.

Thirteen suspects were detained in connection with the seven bomb attacks in Songkhla province, which injured three, on Saturday night. The 13 suspects detained for further interrogation were teenagers from three deep south provinces. They told police that they were visiting Samila Beach for pleasure.

The army's spokesman Akra Thiprote said Sunday that four bomb attacks rocked the province's Muang district, slightly injuring two.

In Hat Yai district, three bomb attacks took place, no one injured. Initial investigation showed that they were small bombs.

The spokesman asked local people to stay update with the information from the authorities and asked them to report to the authorities if they had information.

"We believe that the insurgents wanted to cause chaos, not to kill anybody. They wanted to create chaos in the province which is a tourism destination and economically important to the region," the spokesman said.

Thai military helicopter crashes in south, 6 dead

A Thai air force helicopter crashed on Wednesday in the country's troubled south killing all six aboard, an army spokesman said, the second military helicopter to go down in the region in less than two months.

The Bell UH-1H - with two pilots, two mechanics and two rescue workers - crashed in the the southern province of Yala, but its cause was unknown, Colonel Acra Tiproch said.

'We don't know what caused it to crash yet, but I don't think it was the work of the militants since Betong is relatively free of attacks,' Mr Acra told Reuters by telephone referring to a hilly town popular with Malaysian tourists just over the border.

The Vietnam War era aircraft, nicknamed Huey, crashed after dropping off three senior army officers in Betong and was heading to its base, he said.

The same model of helicopter carrying six forensic experts, two pilots and two mechanics suffered engine trouble and crashed on June 20 in Yala, killing all on board.

It was ferrying the forensic team to the site of a gun battle between Muslim rebels and security forces earlier on the day in Yala, one of four southernmost provinces where 3,000 people have been killed since 2004.

I know Thailand does not want to lose land, as it has to other neighbouring countries, but what use is it trying to retain these three provinces. Does this area have rich minerals or potential oil wells? If not I think it would be better to move all the budhists further north, and rehouse them. Then I would give these three provinces back to the muslims. This area can either revert back to Malaysia or they can become totally independant. By that I mean that Thailand should not give them anything, just leave the present infrastructure for them, then see how they go on their own.

An armed forces helicopter crashed on a mission in the deep South on Wednesday. All 10 military men aboard were killed.

The UH-1H Huey helicopter was on its way to the Betong district in Yala province from a nearby air force base when it smashed into thick forest just before noon, said Army spokesman Col Acra Tiproch. The Huey helicopter crashed shortly before touching down at Betong district, the southernmost town in Thailand, in Yala province just above the Malaysian border. The 10 people aboard included the pilot, co-pilot, seven Air Force men and an army officer. Most helicopters in the Thai armed forces are operated by the Air Force. Col Acra said they suspected technical malfunction was to blame. He ruled out the possibility the aircraft was show down, because "There are no militants operating near the crash site." "We still don't know what caused the crash," said Air Force spokesman Montol Sanchukorn. "We have sent a team to investigate." It was the second helicopter crash in two months in the troubled deep South, which comprises the provinces Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.
