Chiang Mai Guesthouse

Featured Replies

Will be travelling up from Phuket to CM and then on to Mae Hong Son. Will only be in CM for the one night preceeding travel and don't want to have to drag baggage around looking for accommodation for so short a stay. Any recommendations for a nice traditional guesthouse, preferably without a gaggle of backbackers off on their way elephant trekking and smoking opium with the hill tribes? Thanks. :o

I can highly recommend the Seven Suns Hostel. Stayed there recently and it was a real home-away-from-home. Close to the Night Market. Very welcoming.

That is a good suggestion, but the location is not what people would usually describe as near the night market.

As a guesthouse, Gap's House, just inside the Old Town, ain't bad and is a defo step up from the backpacker norm, but unfortunately they don't take reservations.

The Montri is always good for a night and right in the middle of town. Although not a guesthouse, it has good facilities and they charge around 750 - 053211070.

Just up the road from here is the Tamarind although it is pretty expensive but really nice:

East of the ping is Baan Orapin which also has a traditional look.

I've stayed at Smile House Guest House several times and always enjoyed my stay. Nice relaxing place with very friendly staff.

About 10 minutes walk from the night bazaar. Incidently, if you haven't been before, the night bazaar isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway. If you happen to be in CM on a Sunday, the Sunday market is much better.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Wanted something near the night market as in the same area as the English pubs (from what I remember) and affordable Guinness compared to here on Phuket, so thought I might fill my boots, so to speak. Although agree the night market is unrecognisable from when I first visited ten years ago!

Will check out recommendations. Thanks again.

Tip. Always include as much info as possible in the op so members don't waste time posting stuff that'll be of no use anyway. :o

Not too many traditional guesthouses right in the night market. You'd have to go for something like the Suriwongsee, Princess or the Royal Lanna to be in the thick of it.

Great little Spot 6months ago 600 Baht a night. 2 min Walk to Pornping Hotel for a Disco or pay 130 Baht for breakfast ticket for one of the best 'Buffet" breakfast in Chiangmai.

Just booked Tawan Court after taking a look at their website. Looks ideal. Didn't spot one overstuffed backpack in the lobby photo :o

Thanks for the tip Jackr, but didn't specify the night bazzar in original post as everything in CM within striking distance anyway and was more concerned wouldn't end up spending the night having to listen to tales of having 'Done' Burma/Laos/Cambodia etc' from irritating little buggers on 'gap year' as on previous trips. Being in closer proximity to the cheap Guinness just a bonus :D :D :D

Thanks again everyone. Great travel advice on this forum :D
