Whats Your Favorite Chick Flick?

Featured Replies

I know, Jorinda, I think I'm having trouble here. This thread made me realize I'm not a "chick flick" kind of girl, or at least how the mainstream defines it. I feel like I have to shove myself into a mold. I find the mass media movies aimed at "chicks" to be incredibly boring and cloyingly sweet - nothingness - like air-spun cotton candy. It's hard for me because I also have a respect for every aspect of film: acting, directing, cinematography, and a dam_n good story.

Anyway, I consider a chick flick to be anything I like - :o - with strong, original roles for women, whether they are evil, quirky, sweet, overcoming adversity, or funny. It would do some of you ladies good to watch a few off of my list because I have excellent taste :D:D I tried to name some stuff that is really good quality that you guys may have not seen. I love film, so I get a little bossy about it, so just bear with me guys.

I'll try to participate again:

If you liked The Color Purple, watch: Their Eyes were Watching God, with Halle Berry. Definitely a woman's story about overcoming adversity, at a certain time in the American South when shed didn't have a whole lot of choices. You are mostly watching Halle, but she is good.

Frankie and Johnny : Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino; She's a waitress, he just got out of jail and is a short order cook, both over 35, never found love, never found their dreams, they find each other, very sweet.

Cold Mountain I'm telling you guys, it's a GREAT film with all the markings of a quality chick flick.

I liked Pretty in Pink and the Breakfast Club. I liked Pretty Woman, but mostly because of her edgy friend Laura San Giacomo, the other prostitute in the movie. I got pretty bored with the knight in shining armor deal at the end.

If you want to see a great chick film watch, Dogfight with Lili Taylor. It is about a strong, talented young woman that unwittingly wins a contest of the young marines in the same bar, to find the ugliest woman and arrange a date with her. It's a great movie.

And one classic chick film that all you chicks overlooked (I know you guys will love this one): Officer and a Gentlemen. If I had to choose one stereotypical chick film, that's it.

If you want a sob movie, watch the Notebook. I wasn't too interested in seeing it but didn't I just bawl my eyes out watching it!! Definitely a better film then the cover depicts it as. For some reason Legends of the Fall makes me cry too... love it more for the Brad factor though sad as that is.

Ruthless people, bette midler ! superb :o

One of my favorite laugh-out-loud movies of all time.

" ... I'm being sold by K-Mart .... "

*If you liked this movie, you should see Raising Arizona, by the Cohen Brothers. Holly Hunter, Nicholas Cage - frickin' HILARIOUS!

Ok, yeah, I'm with you now. Another little known Brad film that was directed by Redford: A River Runs Through It; about brothers, though.

And another classic chick film that I love: The Last of the Mohicans, with Daniel Day Lewis and Madeline Stowe. You can't beat it:

"Stay alive, because, I will find you ..... I will find you .... " One of the most powerful images in chick films - wow.

kat, I severely doubt Sin City is a chick flick, but it's one of my favorite movies too. I love the style and the neo-noir themes. If you liked sin city, have you seen Brick?

Cold Mountain was good but I got distracted every time the actors would switch off/on their accents

I'm not really a chick flick viewer, but I actually liked the Notebook.

I haven't seen Notebook and I haven't seen Brick, so I'll take a look.

Thanks guys.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

I don't like mindless sweet stuff either, so that's why I'm not contributing much to this "chick flick" thread :o

Hardly anything I've watched in the past 10 years falls in this category. (Unless I'm forced to by my gang of giggly gal pals)

  • How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days
  • Pretty Woman
  • Sweet Home Alabama

Well .. that are my CHICK FLICK favs.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Agreed - loved this one Bambina.

Plus "Thelma & Louise", "Chocolat" (SBK - great thread by the way, I'm adding loads to my "list of movies to watch!" )

"Frankie & Johnnie" (Al Pacino one, KAt mentioned) - We just saw last week - fab, loved it!!!

Also the classics "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "Little Women" - I can watch these over and over again.

"Something's Gotta Give" - Diane Keaton plays a great role.

The Nicholas Cage one about being an angel.... Forget the name, anyone????? - he falls in love with a lady doctor (forget her name too :o ) and he makes a decision to become "human", followed by tragic ending - I bawled my eyes out!!!

"The Holiday" - Cameron Diaz - little bit cheesy but enjoyed it - a nice feel good movie! Plus great eye candy with Jude Law! :D

"The English Patient"

"Desperately Seeking Susan" - Madonna in the 80s with Rosanne Arquette

"Meet Joe Black" - another poster mentioned - great :D Also "The RIver Runs Through (It?)"

"Lost in Translation" - Sophia Coppola played a great riole as well as directing! Inspired me to want to visit Japan.

Terms of Endearment - (Shirley McLaine) Shed buckets of tears, plus most of Meryl Streep's movies.

Oldies but goldies - Pretty Woman, Ghost, Dirty Dancing, Bridget Jones Diaries, Four Weddings & a Funeral (Andie McDowall)......

Also "The Rabbit Proof Fence" about Aborigines in Australia - fascinating movie I th.ink it was based on a true story.

Keep em coming - I'm picking up ideas from you all - gals and guys! :D

"Desperately Seeking Susan" - Madonna in the 80s with Rosanne Arquette

OMG - yes, Yes, YES! - watched that hundreds of times in the '80s; great fun. I wanted to list Lost in Translation also, but forgot.

There are few great films that even after had seen dozens of times and still draws my tears :

" Born Free" Story about lioness names 'Lisa'

" Heaven Can Wait " starring: Warren Beaty & Julie Christie

" Doctor Zhivago " starring: Omar Sharif & Julie Christie

Now I prefer to watch these films with girlfriends only or watch alone. It's so embarrazed to be caught teary eyes infront of the guys.

Dirty Dancing - even after the 600 millionth viewing it keeps it's appeal!

Dr Zhivago - epic music, beautiful people, great story. Do you know it was filmed in Spain and all the snow is in fact marble dust? And Julie Christie is still so beautiful.

Gone with the Wind - see above plus some of the all time great lines. Scarlet o Hara is the best female film character ever created - she is so real. You want to hate her but you recognize a lot of yourself in her too and you end up loving her just like everyone else does. I personally think Rex came back in the end - how could he not??

Cinema Paradiso - sob sob sob, just remembering the music makes me want to cry

....ooooh now I just want to curl up with a tray of ferrer roche and watch them all!!

Remains of a Day. :o

- Breakfast at Tiffany

- Amelie

- The city of lost children

All of them make me cry

Remains of a Day. :o

I've just seen Atonement and loved it.It's up there with the greats of weepy chick flicks most of which have been mentioned. Thanks Kat for such a great selection definitely have to watch some I haven't seen you are quite a movie buff.

Nobody has mentioned Titanic-was prepared to dislike it but was plesantly surprised.

Three Colours Red,White and Blue- fabulous.

Roman Holiday-timeless

Anger Management-very funny

Tim- the love story with a young Mel Gibson and Piper Laurie is very sweet.

Anger Management-very funny

Very frustating.

my preference is a quickie, not a flickie. but the 45 minutes delay till the blue pill works is a bit bothersome :o

:o and I asked a Chinese guy colleague what's his favourite 'chick flick' and he wanted to know what's the meaning of a 'chick flick' as in movies with naked girls? He likes all of those lol.

city of angels (gotta love nicholas cage)

beaches (why has nobody mentioned this? or is this more a gay man movie??)

sunshine (very old, and not seen it for years but from memory i cried in the beginning, the middle and the end)

the holiday (a 'nice' movie)

my big fat greek wedding (gotta agree BambinA)

Casablanca

Out of Africa

Truly,Madly,Deeply

The Bridges of Madison Country

What Women Want

Something's Got to Give

Out of Africa

Something's Got to Give

Oh yeah loved that one.

And Donna, you're right about Beaches and gay males, and by the way, where are they on this thread? One of my gay male friends has the black and whites of all the greats: Betty Davis, Garbo, Marilyn, Harlow, which reminds me:

Gone with the Wind

"Tomorrow I'll find a way .... after all, tomorrow is another day."

i once saw gone with the wind in a 'gay' cinema. that certainly was a different way to watch the movie. it was like a comedy. to hear these very camp men calling out 'ooh scarlet...you are such a BITCH' was hysterical.

Love Actually.

Hahaha Donna that would have been an experience lol.

When Harry Met Sally.I think that one set the genre for the modern day 'chick flicks'

Amelie is my fav film of all time. It's so refreshing to have a movie that makes you feel good watching it rather than shocking, gory, teary, depressing, ... I have seen it countless times and never get sick of it and it always makes me smile the whole way through. Great story and great cinematography. French language btw.

'Just noticed this topic scrolling down, Ladies... had to read the whole 3 pages before posting these 2 recent 'sleepers':

French Kiss with Meg Ryan, Kevin Kline, and Jean Reno (a Lawrence Kasdan flick)

The Sleeping Dictionary with Jessica Alba (direct to video; beautiful cinematogrpahy and music)

Nobody has mentioned Titanic-was prepared to dislike it but was plesantly surprised.

Titanic came out when I was in elementary school, so of course half of my giggly girl friends saw it 7 times. I liked it too, just not as much as the other 10 year old girls. I watched it again this year and the biggest thing I loved about it was the costuming, even though the romance part wasn't bad. (Was Rose seriously supposed to be 17? She looks 25)

city of angels (gotta love nicholas cage)

beaches (why has nobody mentioned this? or is this more a gay man movie??)

sunshine (very old, and not seen it for years but from memory i cried in the beginning, the middle and the end)

the holiday (a 'nice' movie)

my big fat greek wedding (gotta agree BambinA)

City of Angels - Thanks Donna - I could not remember the title for the life of me.

And Beaches - Oh how I cried! Bette Middler is such a wonderful actress.

Out Of Africa - yep - with you on that one too gals!

Amelie - Fab!

Keep em coming, I'm adding to my "Ones to Watch" list! :o
