Tiger demands early check-in

NEW budget airline Tiger Airways is advising people to check-in two hours before departure – or risk losing their seat.

The rules are the strictest for Australian domestic flights with low-cost competitors Jetstar and Virgin Blue allowing customers to check-in 30 minutes before departure.

Interstate, some passengers have been turned away from Tiger Airways flights, for missing the strict check-in deadline.

Airline spokesman Matt Hobbs said: "We do have a firm cut-off policy to ensure people who are there on time get to their destination on time."

Mr Hobbs said it was important customers were aware of the policies.

He said the airline would try to accommodate late passengers who arrived before the estimated time of departure.

"They won't lose their money if they turn up before the estimated time of departure and we will try to facilitate them on another flight," he said.

The airline on Monday drastically reduced prices on 15,000 seats on selected domestic routes around the country.

Most of them, including Adelaide to Melbourne flights, were on sale from $9.95, one-way, including taxes. The fare yesterday was $49.95.

Tiger Airways is expected to be very aggressive in pricing over coming months.

The inaugural Tiger Airways flight arrives from Melbourne in Adelaide at 10.55am. The first flight out is at 12.25pm.

Tomorrow's flights are expected to be near capacity. Tiger will have two flights a day each way, seven days a week.

Jetset Travelworld Group's communications manager, Damien Hanger, said this week's $9.95 fare was "quite an effective marketing tactic that Jetstar, Virgin Blue and now Tiger Airways have used in the past to stimulate awareness".

Tiger Airways will fly Adelaide passengers directly to Tullamarine in Melbourne, compared with Jetstar which lands out of the city at Avalon.

Jetstar spokeswoman Simone Pregellio said the "service is working well for us".

"What we have been finding is we have been so busy on the Adelaide services, especially Adelaide to Avalon over the Christmas break," she said.

Don't know if I will use Tiger after this ...

Tiger Airways’ staffing problems leaves passengers stranded at Perth Airport

Monday, 14 January 2008

In a West Australian news report, passengers were left at Perth International Airport after low-cost carrier, Tiger Airways, told them three hours after their flight was due to leave that it had been cancelled as a result of staffing problems.

The flight 717 was scheduled to leave at 10:30 pm though passengers were not informed until 1 am that the Tiger Airways crew had surpassed the allowed working hours and could not fly till the next day.

More than 200 people were stranded at the airport and were not given any assistance in finding accommodation or another flight.

Reports state that many passengers refused to leave Tiger Airway’s check-in section and security had to be called in.

“There must have been 180-200 people there and just no communication whatsoever,” said Brian Adams, a representative of an under 14’s soccer team who missed their pre-games season as a result of the cancellation.

A spokesperson from the airline stated that refunds will be given back to all the passengers.

He also stated that passengers were notified “as quickly as possible” about the cancellation once the flight captain had decided that the return trip to Singapore would have pushed the crew beyond their allowed working hours.

“It’s my understanding that the route and the operations of the route are well within operating hours usually for the crews,” said the spokesman.

Having snapped one of those $0 fares one way, I still had to pay $63 extra for the following:

- $21 airport tax

- $30 fuel surcharge

- $8 admin charge

- $5 seat allocation fare.

Or I can take a first class coach up to KL for only $40. No thanks!
