Has anyone else noticed the abundance of styrofoam packaging?

Especially with takeaway food?

Considering the fact that Thais love to burn their trash, why aren't all the containers made of a stong paper, or cardstock?

I don't think styrofoam is biodegradable, does anyone know if it's even recyclable?

Is it a conspiracy of the styrofoam industry to offer this packaging cheaper than a paper version?

Styrofoam not worth nufic, Cans plasic bottles worth somic, no see cans or bottles along side of road. See plenty plastic bags & class bottles, not see recycle bins. See plenty of fires along side road, sometimes cannot see what's in front of me. Accident one day, sure.

too true. the thing is when i was a kid, people would just throw stuff out the window of the car (not ours, mind you). nowadays if anyone did that they would be fined big time.

i think it will take at least one generation to change the thai society (any society for that matter) on the importance of recycling and the impact on the environment that not doing so is having.

the government needs to start a campaign which will educate people in the importance of recycling. better still, if HRH started a high profile campaign, it would be an instant hit.

We're on the same page Donna.

When I was a youngster there was an ad on the telly, where an American Indian in full garb, was standing on the side of the road when someone in a car whizzed by and threw some trash out the window.

The camera then cut to the old Indian who then had a tear running down his cheek, and the ad then just had the words "please keep America beautiful". It was poingnant and it worked.

Something like that with HRH I think would hit home with the Thais.

How to make that happen..........????

Yeh major problems in Phuket with the rubbish & recycling. I know the local goverment is trying to improve things, but it's going to take some time. Driving around on a bike in the dry season it seems that you just go from cloud to cloud of disgusting rubbish and waste smells, it's not good.

Wow, I'd thought that to myself many times before.

I toyed with the idea of persuading someone to write to the Palace to suggest just that. But I don't really know the right people, can't write the correct language, and would probably only be accused of pretentiousness anyway. Yes, I know, the road to hel_l is so paved.

All the trash everywhere in Thailand in general (and Phuket in particular) is one of my pet rant subjects (I nurture many others too).

Thais profess to love their country, but many think nothing of attempting to bury it under a mountain of stinking rubbish. 'Your country is not a dustbin' (trashcan) might be a good start for a campaign.
