I emigrated to LOS in 2003 @ age 55 - no super etc.

Things change.

For me to access the OAP I must return to Oz for 2 years.

I have no relatives and am wheelchair bound.

No Oz pollie or bureaucrat will respond to my correspondence.

A bit more information would be nice.

Are you on any sort of government pension at the moment?

What have you been living on for the last 14 years?

I noticed in a previous post you mentioned you said you broke your leg and

are in a wheelchair. Are you in a wheelchair permanently?

Have yo run out of money and need the pension?

There's a couple of OAP guru's on here that would be able to provide with some

good information once they come along.

Contact this group in your former home state.

You may need to ring them first, they're not keen on email.

I emigrated to LOS about 15 years ago , aged 55. Turned 65 and got the OAP. Before that I was on a Disability pension. I was born in Oz and was paying tax there till I left. Where was superglue born, how long was he an Ozzie tax payer? ( I return to Oz twice a year, dunno if that makes me different to superglue. Sorry to hear youve become unstuck. )

IMHO you need to get back to Australia, then go to the nearest Centrelink office. Phoning them in Australia is a waste of time, their call centre system is ratshit.

I assume you've declared yourself resident in Thailand. That's the problem, no pollie or bureaucrat will respond to someone who is not a resident voter.

You could try the International free call from Thailand to the following number: 001 800 611 4136. Good luck.

Different Govt Depts have different interpretations of what denotes whether a person is a resident, or not.

"pAyment stops if you go overseas during the next 2 years.(of gettng the OAp)

This is also the rule if you got payments under a social security agreement with another country while you lived outside Australia.

If you leave Australia temporarily but stay an Australian resident, this normally counts as part of the 2 years.".  I temporally leave australia a coupla times a year for about 5 months at a time . I have an Australian address. Ctr link is well aware of this.

The legislation says that you must be in Australia to apply.

The only exceptions I know of is if you are already receiving the DSP and have been granted indefinite portability or have been grandfathered under earlier legislation.

You need to call Centrelink and/or the Social Security Rights group that I gave you the link to.

@superglue, you are 'non resident'.  You're going to have to go back and apply for the OAP, then serve the two years in Oz to reestablish your residency before becoming eligible for 'portability', and can then go back overseas with your pension.  You can serve the time anywhere in Oz - so choose somewhere cheap.  Some of the mining towns have gone belly up, don't know what the rents are like though - realestate.com.au has places for rent listed.  You can maybe go on the dole while you await a decision re the OAP?

You can use the pension income to qualify (part qualify?) for a Thai retirement visa should you wish to go back, so could use some of the B800k to get you to Oz and tide you over.

@keithpa and some of the ... older guys.  Times have changed, the govt is continually tightening the OAP eligibility criteria and the residency requirements.  Much discussion on that earlier in this thread.  You got yours, good for you.  Not so easy for us young 'uns.

Same here. That's the crux of it - an Australian address.

Living in Australia

Living in Australia means Australia is your usual place of residence.

Australia includes:

  • the Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands
  • the Territory of Christmas Island
  • Norfolk Island, and
  • Lord Howe Island

How we decide

When we are deciding whether you live in Australia, we’ll look at:

  • where you live and who you live with
  • if you have family in Australia or overseas
  • your employment, business or financial ties in Australia and overseas
  • your assets in Australia and overseas
  • how often and how long you travel outside Australia, and
  • anything else we think is relevant

https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/enablers/residence-descriptions

Note the last requirement, a convenient "catch all".

Being an ex taxation officer, academic & CPA since the late '60s, I have felt the changes.

My sister did me in for a considerable sum of $$$.

In addition I have been researching this matter for years.

The current PM has the door shut for me.

Returning to Oz is not on the cards.

Approaching 70, I prefer to spend my remaining time with my Thai wife.

Oz address - emigrating to LOS in 2003, I do not & will not have an Oz residential address.

Add 'catch all'.

I retired early by choice, traveled, emigrated to LOS in 2003.

Living in a rural area is quality.

I have never been in receipt of the OAP.

I will not be returning to Oz.

BTW I do have B800k for extension of my retirement visa.

I do not have an Australian address.

You could always apply for a non-immi O based

on marriage, which will at least free up some cash for you.

Probably better off with a provincial town. I understand property owners in the mining towns are not dropping their rents because they bought in when asset values were high, and still trying to recoup their losses.

I assume the OP could apply for a disability pension, being in a wheel chair. Going on the dole means he has to apply for 20 jobs a month, and convince Centrelink he has done so.

You're right - moving goalposts is a big part of the job description of Human Services. How else would they justify their own existence?
