What Internet Access Is Available Chaiyaphum Area?

Recommended Posts

Hello all

I am moving to Ban Khwao near Chaiyaphum later this year for an extended period of time with my family.

I'm wanting to know what options I might have for Internet access?

I will just die if my only options are slow dialup? Is ADSL Broadband via the home phone lines in these rural areas possible?

Or some wireless access method? We have a laptop that we would want to connect to the Internet.

Many thanks in advance.

You can probably get TT & T to fit you up with ADSL in Ban Khwao I have that now and its pretty good. The other option would be TOT ipStar. I had that at first and paid them to take it away, it was slower than a 2 wheeled tuk tuk.

When are you actually coming to Bang Khwao? Will you be living i nthe town or an outlying village?

Nidge.

Thanksfor that mate

I'm in a similar situation but moving to Pak dee chum pol. I was wondering if a sat. system would work. There's no phone now or likely to be in the future. Everything I've heard about ipstar is bad.

Any other info or advice you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Hi Nidge

Thanks for the reply, I contacted some Thai Internet companies one called Jasmine Internet Co.,Ltd got back to be and said I can have ADSL on the phone number I gave them via a TT&T line, however its 2889 bht per month about £40 which seems very expensive, I thought it would be more like 600 - 1000 bht per month? I then asked them if they did a cheaper package and they came back to me quoting a discount of 390 bht making it 2499 bht.

They quoted a 1Mbyte Clean Cafe service which sounds like a business rate to me. I guess the good news is ADSL seems to be available where I am staying I just now need to find a better deal from some where! However another ISP KSC Cimmercial Internet Co, Ltd stated that we were not in their coverage area.

Are you living in Ban Khwao Nidge? As far as I understand it we are going to be based in a village about 10 mins in the car from Chaiyaphum town. I moving over there with my fiancee and expect to be there by June all going to plan. I'm pretty excited but nervous as well as not sure fully what to expect. I have been to Thailand four times before and last time visited a friends family in a small village near Surin in the North so I'm gussing things will be similar to that area. Just looking forward to kicking back and not working and living a relaxed lifestyle for a while, will probably try and get some sort of Internet business off the ground so definately need ADSL to survive.

Rather than ADSL what about Satellite ? Costs etc? I hear you can get broadband via Satellite and also TV. UBC is it? What TV channels would you get?

Cheers.

You cannot get UBC internet in Chaiyaphum, I asked already. I get the UBC gold package which is about 1500 baht per month and there are far too many channels for me. I couldn't list them as i only really watch Discovery NGC and BBC world.

I never heard of Jasmine, but if they are willing to fit you up with a TT & T line then that means TT & T can do it also. Jasmine are obviously just middlemen. The TT & T office is in town right near the (south) bus station. The package the offer includes a free modem but you need to buy your own telephone. The modem is a pile of junk so i recommend you buy a Linksys modem first. I got mine in Phantip plaza Bangkok for about 1600 baht.

I live 4km from the City on the road to Ban Khwao. I used to live in a tiny village with the in-laws 15km past Ban Khwao. There is nothing of interest in Ban Khwao really other than the silk shops. Chaiyaphum is pretty dead also so expect a lot of kicking back!!! Send me a PM before you arrive and i'll let you know if i will be home or at work. I can give you some contacts for things like furniture, curtains and builders if you need them.

p.s. do you ride a bike?

Hi Nidge, thanks for the response again!

I am an I.T. Guy by trade so have no problems configuring anything to do with computers, I was planning on picking up an ADSL wireless router in Bangkok as it happens! Can sit in the garden then with the laptop! I think Jasmine are an ISP company probably better as you say to cut them out and go straight to TT&T for our broadband.

I spoke to my girl friend last night we are in Ban Khwao center not in a smaller village on the outskirts but I understand the whole place is

pretty small and quiet! Really hope I don't get bored! We are going to be staying in her grand parents house, they have even installed Air con for us in our bedroom which is a bonus!

I can ride bikes yes, both push bikes and motor bikes. What have you got in mind?

Thanks again for the friendly help and advise I'll buy you a beer sometime!

I guess you have not been to Ban Khwao yet, (too tired right now to re-read all the posts!). When you get to Ban Khwao you will feel like you are in one of the villages as there really is nothing there. I very nearly bought a house there though so don't take it like i am complaining about the place. I decided not to buy there just so i could get a bit of extra mileage away from the in-laws.

As for bikes i only ride mountain bikes. There's loads of places around Ban Khwao to ride and just recently i have found some great hilly stuff around the "stonehenge of Thailand", just north of Tadton waterfall.

Looking forward to the beer already :o

No I have not been to Ban Khwao before, the furthest north I have ever been is to a village near Surin. I met my TGF in the UK. I've been to Thailand four times in the past on holidays. I fully expect it to be a culture shock I am not from a city but a fairly large town in the UK.

But I need some R&R and some time to chill out with my family.

The mountain biking sounds great! I plan to get fit and lose the beer belly if I can, so want to get in to some good exercise whilst I am over there!

So how big is Chaiyaphum Town? What kinda things are there to do in these parts? I feel the need to buy an XBOX games console coming on lol!

Cheers.

I guess there should not be too much culture shock if you have already been to surin but Chaiyaphum is much quieter and smaller. I heard that there was 62,000 people there but that could be the whole province for all i know! There is a Tesco Lotus with KFC, Swensons & Dunkin Donuts inside and that's about it really. Oh, and a Makro cash and carry just opened outside of town. No cinema or bowling alley and no farang bars that i know of. There are a fair few restaurants selling reasonably good food but nothing western.

I fell in love with mountain biking 30 years ago so it's great for me here, if it wasn't for that i would be going crazy looking for things to do. An Xbox would be a good idea, (i'm not allowed one :o ).

It sounds pretty much as my GF described it to me to be honest! Shame about no farang bars however. I use to be a pro on BMX bikes in my youth not done alot of mountain biking but something I could get in too! Do they sell electrical items at Makro like in the UK? TV's and the like.

As long as I have an internet connection and a few home comforts I'm sure I will be fine! Would be good to meet a farang drinking buddy as I expect not many of the locals will speak any English.

You can buy almost anything you need in Makro or Tescos. I bought my TV in Tescos as it was just a little bit cheaper but i don't think it's always like that. For an Xbox or PS3 etc you are probably better off getting one in Bangkok.

You are right about the locals not speaking english. Sometimes when listening to them i wonder if they are even speaking Thai. One of my neighbours brings her grandson to play with my baby and she talks to me non stop. I rarely understand a single word! At least it should give you motivation to get better at speaking thai.

Edit: Oh and another thing I'd like to get in to is fishing!
