Garmin makes one called the Zumo for motorcycles. The price will probably choke you up a little. 41,400 baht at Gadget Trend. There is a hand held one that has a handlebar mount available. The eTrex Legend H CX is waterproof and I think it is pretty rugged. Gadget Trend sells those for about 18,000 baht. I have an eTrex Legend CX that is a step above H model. It is a nice little unit that works well. If you were in the US, you could buy an eTrex H CX for about $200 off eBay plus the map from Garmin for another $119. Link for Gadget Trend;

Thanks for the fast reply gary and mike. The zumo sounds good to me however the thaiprice don't.If I buy one from overseas will I be able to buy the map in thailand?

Gadget Trend will install the Thailand map on your Garmin for 7,000 baht. I recently had the map installed in my Street Pilot 2610 and it works great. The price entitles you to one free update and updates after that are 1,500 baht.

If you are in the US, Garmin has the same map for $119 but no updates are available. Garmin gives you the map on an extra memory card, so that is also a consideration.

Anthony, the bike I got,as the topic is one year old,is the one in my avator.Yamaha roadliner XV1900.Got the Zumo 550 mounted on it but bought it from the UK at less then half the price it is in Thailand and with the bluetooth headset built in in the helmet.Works a charm and wouldn't want to miss the music while riding anymore.

I bought the Garmin 60Cx with handlebar mount, it is brilliant, very accurate, doesn't loose sattelites all the time, and it fits in your pocket when you leave your bike behind. Waterproof down to 1 meter, 1/2 price of a Zumo and if you run it on batteries they last 18 hours. Love it to death, as it also fits with the clip to your belt when you try to figure your way around on foot in a city.

Paid 227 $ for mine, maps can easily be downloaded from the internet for free, so buy overseas whatever you decide on, and ask someone to carry it in as the Thai customs are completely insane, they will hammer you for a GPS man, I can promise you that. Think ESRI paid someone important to put "extra" tax on Garmins if they are shipped in.

Go for what suits you man, I thought of the Zumo but put away the idea as I also trek a bit to see waterfalls etc where you have to walk to get there. Then the battery and the ease of carry came far above the ability to touch screen with gloves on... I use the buttons with gloves on and guess what it works perfect. Reminds me a bit when US and Russia meet up in space for the first time. Nasa had used millions of dollars to develop a ballpen which worked under zero gravity, as there is no pressure or gravity to feed the ink to the ball. So proudly the US astronauts handed over a pen each to the Russians who shrugged and pulled up pencils...

Good luck with your choice.

Cheers Bard

Bard, you gave me a good tip with the Yamaha dealer (in meantime I bought my new bike there) now you make me courious about a GPS system.

My problem here in Bkk is the orientation and finding the right driving direction across all oneway streets.

Will this Garmin 60Cx guide me correctly through Bkk? and can I switch off Expressways? How accurate is it outside Bkk - for example to guide me to Pattaya?

Helmut

Don't forget the gps-enabled mobile phones, I have an Asus 527 that has GPS as well as music and WiFi. I got a Bluetooth stereo headset for it, and the Garmin maps so it tells me when to turn even though it's in my pocket ( sometimes in a ziplock when it rains! ). That way I have music and GPS for in and out of Bangkok.

At 16,000 Baht when I bought it (a year ago, it's about 6000 now I think) it just made sense to get everything together in one package with my mobile.

You can get the Garmin maps at MBK or Fortune Town if you ask around.

You can switch off toll roads with garmin. I use a Etrex HCX which is waterproof but it's designed for trecking so doesn't have audio directions. About 18,000 Bt.

Hi Helmut,

The Garmin will guide you correctly through Bangkok, and select no tollroad / expressways and it don't take you there. The Garmin is very accurate all over Thailand. Say you want to go to Pattaya, just scroll it up, select a point of interest "say the hotel you want to go to" and hit it, and it leads you to the point. IF you want to avoid Bangna Trad road you select in a point at e.g route 344 as a waypoint and there you go, it will bring you there via route 344.

Excellent product, there are probably cheaper units out there but I like the "bulletproof" 60Cx a lot. I find it useful for riding, walking in Bangkok where I do not know where to go (outside mainstream areas) hiking to waterfalls, etc. Brilliant little thing, fits in your pocket as well, and with the handlebar mount it is great for riding.

Cheers Bard

Yeah 60csx owner here and very pleased.

As with all GPS's you have to know when to ignore them, they are not perfect, but for settling into a new city they are just great.. Pass a place you want to remember, just hit 'mark' and its there in the mobile memory for finding.. May not be the absolute best route every time but dam_n close. Love it.

Sorry to reactivate this old thread from February.

I need a navigator for getting around Bangkok. It must do voice directions, because I have to keep my eyes on the road. Bard recommend the Garmin GPS Map 60cx. But the store ' Gadgetrend' told me, only the Zumo comes with audio directions. However the Zumo is far too expensive.

Anyone know a cheaper GPS model with audio directions and Bluetooth.

I am going next month to Germany. Hope to get it cheaper there. And hope to get the right Thai map for it.

Bard said "maps can easily be downloaded from the internet for free".

The shop sells it for 7000 Baht? Is it the same map?

Helmut

Yes its the same maps.. Not hard to find online..

If you need voice and waterproof your options get slimmer, if not the zumo I am unsure. For me the 60csx is a great bit of kit, but voice is not an option on it. You will need to scan the Garmin site.

Like I said above, Garmin Mobile XT is a great program with audio directions. All you need is a GPS phone with Windows mobile on it. You can get it installed for 1000B at Fortune Town, or find it online as a torrent and install it for free. Good detail in Thailand, and Germany! I used it last year in Germany on my phone.

Bard when your driving do you hear what it says or is there an ear piece for it ?

60csx doesnt do voice guidance.

I looked at the 60csx at the Garmin shop, a nice bit of kit, but I too need audio because of spectacle wearing,

(longdistance).

The 760 looks good to me, wrapped in cling film for pooey weather, it might fit the bill.

Only one question, how bright is the screen in daylight?

Adorama have it for $260.00 http://www.adorama.com/GPGAN760.html

Anyone coming in from the US soon? :o Adorama refuse to ship to Thailand.

It will fit in a pocket! :D

cheers

Hi gd,

There is also a new Garmin Nuvi Phone G60 soon be released. It should have everything. But no prices released by now.

Helmut

Thanks Helmut, but 220E's is $300 @ today's rate and the 760 is discontinued & replaced by the skinny versions costing up to 200$ more for the same features. Bluetooth, etc.

I have to act fast to get one, another mob have one in OEM packaging (no frills, no colours) for only $220.00 ! in LA.

Many thanks for your kind offer, the Tigers are still in the fridge awaiting your arrival. :o

Stay safe.

This has been posted before.

I bought what the guys in GT Rider recommended and so did Trent, that is a Garmin 60 cx, has color maps of Thailand, water proof and you can bang it in your pocket when not in use. Also the batteries last for 18 hours on it plus you can use power supply. Bought mine on ebay for 207 US$ and are extremely pleased with it.

I thought about the Zumo but put it away due to;

1. Price, they made a unit for "motorbike" and the price reflect it, it is a joke

2. Battery last 4 hours, most bikes I ride has no power supply and I like to tour, good luck with 4 hours especially on a rental bike

3. Did not fit in my pocket, not cool when you park the bike for shopping or eating

They claim you can use the touch screen with gloves... Wow I can press the buttons easy with gloves on the 60 cx, so all in all the value for money is with 60 cx in my humble opinion, get a RAM handlebar mount from gadetrend and viola ready to go... Great unit fast, auto satellite reception when you loose it, fast recalculation of routes, and lot of usable extras, also comes with belt clip which I find useful on trips when I get out and about at night and need to find stuff, all in all love it.

Cheers Bard
