Firstly "Bar Girl" is synonymous with a girl you meet in a bar, not, as you assume "prostitute".

You have got be joking. Go and stand in Don Muang arrivals for a while and ask every farang (or probaly Thai, for that matter) that comes in "How does a Bar Girl make her money?".

I think that you will indeed find that "Bar Girl" is synonymous with "has sex with customers for money".

And why would I want to do that? I am not that hung up about how Thai Bar Girls make their money.

This posting is not about prostitution, it's about "Bar Girls Are Good". It's just you hung up about prostitution - you stand in Don Muang arrivals. It may well provide food for your preoccupation.

Children. Stop your bickering.

Yes "bar girls" is synonymous with prostitute in Thailand. Big deal.

Are bar girls good?

Many are. I have had the fortune to meet many bar girls who have helped me look for accomodation, tken me to the doctor when I was ill (before you squawk it was conjunctivitus), and taken me to some realy good Thai night clubs.

I didn't pay them.

I didn't pay the bar.

I bought most of the drinks...but not all.

and I didn't sleep with them. (Well not all of them anyway :o ).

I have also met quite a few that are rude, money grabbing and foul-mouthed.

There are many girls that work in bars. My experience is that most (75%) are good.

Maybe not, but you obviously have no idea.

So. Is your wife still a bar girl?

- tut, tut - another assumption?

Is your wife still a bar girl?

We often go to bars, I buy her drinks, we then go home and sleep together - I guess you would label her a bar girl. I call her my wife.

I met my Isaan wife in a bar - she was one of five kids. Her father was murdered when she was 7, two of her brothers then died of starvation. She started full-time work at 12, ironing in Bangkok and has supported what was left of her family ever since.

I know of awful stories like that, and they are not confined to bar girls or boys. My guy lost his Mum and Dad when he was 15-16 (both from cancer, one right after the other) and was forced to leave school early. He's not a bar boy, but has never finished school. Until he does his options are limited.

The other thing I wanted to say here is that I no longer understand what this thread is about. Speaking of bars, you guys appear to be having one of those senseless drinking arguments, where nothing gets accomplished but exhaustion.

Not an assumtion at all. You have proved it beyond a reasonable doubt.

Have you ever even been to Thailand?

I anyone called my wife a bar girl they would be looking for a fight. If I called my wife a bar girl, then I think I would wake the next day to the smell of Penis cooking on stove.

So if I were you, I'd be sleeping very lightly from now on.

Hello readers,

I think most of you are intoxicated, let's this be a friendly forum, let's not go too far as to get each others family involved.

Statements like you wife is an ex-bargirl, your wife is an ex-prostitue, she sold her body for money are uncalled for.

These girls must have a reason for working in such places, some may just like it and I think the majority are due to hardships, or whaterever reason you may think of. Respect them as a fellow human being not as a sex object.

Ask yourself how would you like to have someone shaft their fingers into you ass.

There are rotten eggs in very strata of society.

I remembered reading somewhere in a magazine, an admission

from ex-Baywatch sexpot Pamela Anderson saying she had sex with everyone on the set as least once. Now how would one describe her.

For those who have married these girls. I am sure some have worked out fine and are happy and some may not.

So good luck...  :o

Answer this question. Would you ever have considered marrying a prostitute in your own country?

If the answer is no, (and most guys that marry Thai Bars Girls would answer no), then how come you married a Thai prostitute?

I'd appreciate it if someone could point out how to copy a quote from a previous post!

At the risk of having many people angrily disagree with me, I'm going to propose that generally speaking if a woman finds herself selling her body in one of the wealthiest countries of the world, she differs from the average Thai prostitute and in this respect, the question is irrelevant.

As many posts point out again and again, mosts of the bar girls come from the North East and do not have money, education and therefore opportunity. (Okay MAYBE they could be a waitress for 3,000 baht a month, but what about sending money home to the family?) They are put in a very difficult position and God knows the Thai governemnt isn't stepping in to help.

In contrast, for a woman to end up selling herself in a country like the US or England just to survive, chances are she has a serious drug/alcohol problem or has simply hit rock bottom. Again, generalising here, there would have been a number of options given to her by the society/government/economic reality of her country which would have acted as a net to catch her before the choice of prostitution. If they all fell through, then its almost difficult having sympathy. (i realise that many may have been abused etc., but I'm pointing out what I believe to be a general trend)

Now what are the options that the girl in Issan has?

Not that all Thai prostitutes have only one choice or that all American/English prostitutes have hit rock bottom, but I do think that in general, there is a noticable difference. Now good luck finding out the real reason why she is doing what she is doing, but still something to consider.

pnustedt. You've raised an interesting topic which is widely discussed amongst us foreigners to Thailand.

Unfortunately there are some people on this website (inc a lot of 'senior members') who think they no it all and assume you've never lived in Thailand. I have come across these people, they are probably 50 somethings, arrogant and can't hold a debate or discussion ( a bit like my dad age 60ish! It happens to all sad old men!!). It's frustrating when you want to discuss something sensibly and have your own opinion.

I too believe a 70% of bar girls are kind hearted and would love to meet a future partner and quit their life as a bar girl. It's also true that many bar girls don't sleep with customers, ofcourse some do. They can make their money from drinks and escorting tourists. I know this because my ex was a bar girl.

:o  My wife is Isaan , ex-prostitute from Soycows; now residing in my favourite country . She is intelligent and is of interest to everyone . Mum and Dad seem to be happy . She can cook my favourite food ...Thia . She does know a lot about sex to make me ! happy when needs be ! She is just the happiest person around . Now that I am hitched to her , i am still paying for it I guess ...but , i am just so happy with the whole package. SO, who gives a toss what the world thinks anyway. And life goes on . The opinionated usually go round looking for something to dribble over !

Thetyim  --  I understand your comment about the mother and grandmother.  A good friend of mine had a long-term relationship with a bar girl from Surin.  He eventually made her pregnant and she had a son  --  who he still supports although the girl went back to the bar game.  While she was still pregnant, the girl's mother told my friend that she hoped it would be a girl -- "because girl's make money."  Now, how would a country girl make more money than a man?  Only one way -- go to the bars.

Lanny,

Thanks for that post, it shows just how much pressure these girls are under to provide for the family.

I do not think this discussion will get us anywhere.

Bar girls vary from naive to fully hardened whores.

The hardened ones can put on an incredible act of naive innocence which at first is difficult to detect but with experience you can see through it.

Everyones opinion of bargirls will be different it just depends if you were lucky enough to met one a good one.

Or work in the fields, sell produce at market, work in the noodle bar, feed the buffalo, thresh the rice and cook the meals while poo-chai contemplates his navel in the hammock.

WHAT A GOOD AMOUNT OF REPLIES THIS TOPIC GOT. PEOPLE HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF VIEWS. SOME VERY DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY THE MEN THAT HAVE BEEN HURT SEAM TO HATE THAI LADIES THE MEN THAT HAVENT BEEN HURT ARE FINE WITH IT. JUST AS ANY PERSON YOU MARRY FROM ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD ''IF YOUR HURT YOU HATE''  ''IF YOUR LOVED YOU LOVE''. BUT WITH MANY MEN THAT MARRY THAI LADIES THEY NEED TO GIVE RESPECT TO GET IT BACK AND EVENTUALLY THAT WILL 70% OF THE TIME GROW INTO LOVE.

I do think anyone on this forum has any problems with the bargirl situation of two adults having sex for money. It is a simple relationship of each person getting what they want.

The problems start when a longer relationship developes and the BG starts obtaining money by deception.( I am talking about the bad girls here)

Many BG will have long term relationships with many falangs and be engaged to several at the same time.

This sort of behaviour has burnt a lot of falangs and given them a bad reputation. I hear about another story nearly everyday,  there are a lot of falangs being deceived and this is why us "oldies" start to get a cynical view of the bar scene.

We are trying to help the uninitiated to realise what they are going to come up against.  We are not all anti-BG, but just trying to warn you about the pitfalls.

Easy,  just click on the "quote" box and you will go to reply mode, and can edit which bit you want to quote.

Its easy to do but a bit harder to explain.

Thanks, I've wondered about that also. Of course it took 2 tries.

I know you did state that this was a generalisation, but I know quite a few women who work in  brothels in oz who do not have any of these problems. Most work in this industry for a few months simply to pay off uni debts, buy a house, go travelling etc. In a few months doing this work they earn enough to do all the things that would normally take them a life time. I don't know any bar girls so can't comment on this, but it does appear the financial benefits in this industry are greater than in any other.
