Mekong River bursts its banks and floods Mukdahan

MUKDAHAN: -- The Mekong River have begun to overflow, and has flooded at least three districts in Thailand’s northeast province of Mukdahan.

The heavy rain over the last few days in the northernmost part of Thailand has also contributed to the flooding of vast areas in Mukdahan province.

The provincial authorities believe the Mekong is likely to burst its banks in the near future, and have warned local villagers to be prepared for more severe flooding.

The water level in some of the city’s areas – around government buildings and popular tourist spots – has risen to more than 50 centimetres.

The authorities have provided local residents with sandbags, and have helped them to build water barriers in parts of the city.

Rescue teams have been put on alert, and are ready to deal with flash floods and any emergency situations.

They are closely monitoring the situation.

For several weeks now, almost every region in Thailand has faced heavy rainfalls and monsoon storms.

Many provinces have been severely hit by flash floods, mudslides and torrential rain.
