New car prices in Thailand - are they significantly lower than in, say, the UK or France? Bought a new Honda (CRV) back in April before I knew I would end up here in Thailand ... now the resale value will take a heavy hit, but maybe it's not so bad if the same car is better priced here. Wondered about bringing the CRV over to Thailand, but it's a left-hand drive so probably not a good idea.

Actually, if you buy a vehicle manufactured in Thailand it will be quite a bit cheaper than the equivalent model in the UK. IMPORTED cars take a massive tax hit and so are a lot more expensive.

Example, similar but not quite identical vehicles:-

Ford Ranger Double Cab 4WD 3.0 XLT LIMITED - 903,000 Baht (about £14,500)

Ford Ranger Double Cab 4WD 3.0 XLT Wildtrak - £23,676.25 inc VAT (UK model is made in Thailand)

The other thing you'll see is that used cars hold their value incredibly well compared with home. What would be a 500 quid banger in the UK will fetch 3 grand here, you will however get most of it back when you sell. We actually got more for our 94 BMW 325i than we paid for it after having run the beast for 3 years, did spend quite a bit on it mind :o

The 2nd hand prices of cars here (too expensive) makes new ones a real option as you often have no knowledge of the history etc. You can get a new truck or car for USD20k with all the warranty and stuff so it is worth it really. Finance available in many cases as well.

Local stuff is the way to go, imports as stated are loony prices with up to 300% tax !

There again it depends on the car……… In Sept 2004 I bought a new top of the range Honda Jazz with all the Extras… at the weekend I was looking at Honda UK and the main dealers around my home town…. 2nd hand 2004 top model Jazz was worth more than I paid new and more than a brand new one here… ALL had between 28 – 40,000 miles on the clock, mine is a 2nd car and the km stands at 21,456km, so a lot less then a more expensive one in the UK.

Made me wonder if anyone leaving Thailand have taken there car back with them to the UK ?

Yep, Expat Motors will even do all the paperwork :D

There are taxes and duties to pay in the UK so your savings aren't as great as it first seems :o There are some things you need to do to the vehicle for UK import such as a speedo in MPH and (most important) install a heater :D
