i'm a canadian woman married to a thai man. we have a baby who was born in canada and has all his canadian documentaion with a hyphenated last name. we went to the thai embassy in ottawa to get a thai birth certificate so he has dual citizenship. the woman in the office told us it was against thai law to have a hyphenated name and she couldnt accept the current documentaion to register his birth certificate and that we would have to get everything changed. we chose to hyphenate our baby's name for a reason and dont want to change it. also, we leave for thailand in a month and half and dont have time to change everything even if we wanted to. does anyone know if this is true?

sorry I don't have an answer for you. I could give you my contact at the consulate in Calgary who is super helpful but she would just give you Ottawa probably. Try posting this in the family section, maybe some other parents have given their babies hyphenated names.

Jesstt, I believe the Thai language does not use hyphens and this could be the problem.

Cant give you an answer but maybe your husband could call the Thai MFA and ask or simply, for now at least, apply for the passport in your husbands name. Don't waste any time as Thai embassies overseas quote a 6 week wait to get a Thai passport.

I've only got two middle names, one Anglo and the other one is 'samran', followed by a surname. They manage to fit all four names onto my Thai PP and ID card.

It my try to ask to see if you get things done in a round about way is to use the last part of the double barreled name as the 'official' surname. Say your child was Dominic Joseph Double-Barrel. Just fill in the Barrel into the surname box, and see what happens, and the Dominic Joseph Double

If they kick up a fuss, ask to speak to someone higher, and refuse to leave. Your child is entitled to Thai nationality, the last thing the embassy should be doing is trying to block them from doing so just because there is a hyphen before the final part of their name.

Agree with Samran here, just give your child a single surname on the thai documentation & use the first part of the doube barrel as a middlename or else just use thetranslation of "thomas doublebarrel" rather than "thomas doube-barrel"
