Had a great surprise the other day in Ubon Ratchathani - Makro. Lemons, the real thing( to a European) - yellow - that smell ummmmm - so distinctive. The price was 197Bht for about 14 fruit. I just had to dash home for that G+T. Just having the fruit in the kitchen is good, when you comedown in the morning for that first coffee - that lovely citrus smeeelllllll. :o

My wife bought a lemon tree for the garden last year, a graft onto a variety grown for it's leaves for Thai soups, etc. We now have lemons growing and reaching full size, just need to turn colour and I will have fresh lemons from the garden. I'm also making do for the moment with lemons from Makro (Sisaket).

No worries there - the tree is in a secure garden with a dog, but I can understand someone picking them whilst they are still green, they seem to be taking forever to turn yellow.

Where did you find the grafted lemon tree? I'm growing a couple from seed but I'm afraid they won't grow true.

From a market stall in Rasi Salai - I'll go back there and see if I can get some more, it's growing very well.

Does anyone know the Thai name for lemon? I can't make any head way here in the south in trying to get a tree or lemon either for that matter.

It's the same as for lime (ma-nao) so I guess that you would need to clarify that it is yellow (se leu-ung).

มะนาว เลมอน - manao lemon

or:

เลมอน - lemon from english...

lemon tree:

ต้น ไม้ เลมอน - don mai lemon

Thanks pnustedt. I'll have a look. Seems like they ought to grow pretty well up here in Udon since it gets a bit cooler. Actually this year it's gotten TOO cool for me.

allcladrad, at the Makro here they understand "yellow lime" - ma-nao leu-ung.
