I'm heading to Bangkok for the first time with a view to staying there for around 3 months or so. I'd kinda like to rent an apartment for the period. Is it best to spend a week or so in a hotel thereby giving me the opportunity to negotiate discounts on more permanent accommodation on a face-to-face basis or should I organise it online ?

Can anyone suggest good neighbourhoods to live in ? Ok . . . lemme be a bit more specific . . . I like a bit of bar culture, good food but I still want the area to have a bit of an edge rather than being completely stripped of its soul to accommodate snooty Westerners. Kinda like the equivalent of, say, Portobello Road in West London.

Asoke.

Ya have TBS and MTB stations to get you anywhere.

32 Baht from Swampy using free shuttle and getting public bus.

Jewel in the crown.........

"SOI COWBOY", lotsa culcha...... hehehe

Portobello Rd, think SILOM Rd.

Best allround place for shopping, markets and ripoff bars, strip shows etc.

3 months in Bangers would drive me NUTZ....5 days for me then..go elsewhere... nutha 5 days just before ya go home.

Take a month on Phuket, more laid back, gals cheaper too. :o

Make trips to other places, travel is easy peasy.

Air travel on LCC is almost as cheap as a bus.

Wait till ya get there, then check everything out.

Hi and thanks for the responses. My budget is, I guess, 30K per month but that's got to include food and entertainment. I'm not into fancy decor or full-on creature comforts so anything a coupla notches up from basic will do me just fine.

Never considered that 3 months in Bangkok might be too much being a City boy myself but you've got a point there, Zpete - thanks for the suggestion.

Most people who live here spend far more than that mate, not sure if you are coming on holiday, but if you are it will be a quiet one..

Depends on what "most people" spend their money on doesn't it ? I've seen accommodation going for far less than what I'm looking to spend and read posts from people who've had a perfectly good time with half the budget. I wouldn't say i'm partied out but having done London's scenes over the years, I'm not heading to Thailand for the nightlife, birds and drugs so if my stay proves "quiet", then silent be I
