I received my disc from MS and was going through the steps

before installing;

Check for spyware

Go to manufactures site for updates (compaq)

Get any updates from MS updates

Back up files

etc

I downloaded some driver updates from compaq which they

said were needed before installing SP2. When I turned my

computer back on it was incredibly slow (1/2 hour to go through start up)

Everthing I clicked on seem to work but took 10+ mins to appear on the

screen. There is no way the computer can be used for anything.

I turned the computer off and when starting back up I pressed F2 and the message stated that I may have installed software that was causing a problem for windows and to use last best known configuration.

I did this and it was the same slowness....

I have the installed software in my download box still.

Can anyone help me where to go from here, how to un-install etc.

Sorry I am not great with computers, I don't even know how to re-boot.

I am using internt cafe's now so I am not being rude if my responses are

delayed.

Thanks for your help.

I suggest a total format and I hope that you have a total backup stashed away somewhere. You can get the Compaq stuff later. Good Luck and let us know. :o

hi'

oh .. poor you :o

well, one thing that really change is the "winlogon" that goes on "high" process ...

this might disturb some programs, like antivirus for example ...

did you defrag the C drive before to install SP2?

did you update your antivirus before (by the way, what do you use?)

did you make a backup, or a valid restore point, or some system repair stuff?

if not, you're in trouble .. I mean your com is :D

did you try to uninstall SP2? ... may be not worth to try :D

what mouse said is right ... format and reinstall a clean Xp ... check to have SP1 on,

make the drivers update, check the program you install (pay a visit to microsoft first),

then reinstall SP2 ...

and then it should be alright ... I hope for you :D

cheers

I know someone who had the same problem, sorry no details, but he cured it by uninstalling and re-installing his anti-virus software.

Might be worth a try .

type ctrl alt delete at the same time when logged on.

click taskmanager

click processes

click twice on the bar cpu to sort according to cpu time

This should show which process is taking up all you cpu cycles

you can kill it by right clicking and "end process"

Report back wich process has the most cpu

System idle process is ok , that's mean you don't uses the cpu it's the next high one.

delete that application if you know wich process it is.

so, the compaq update is for SP2 only ... uninstall it!

install Sp2 after taking all precautions required by MS ... and then update your compaq things ...

I wonder if it's not a cycle loop thing :o

Sorry, Noodle, this is not going to help you now, but I thought I would write down what I intend to do to upgrade my computer from XP SP1 to XP SP2.

Requirements:

Spare hard drive

Norton Ghost software

Procedure:

Use Windows Update ( http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ ) to update XP as far as possible, excluding SP2.

Copy all data files (stuff that I created and is not needed to make the computer run) to CDs. Compare files on the CDs with files on the hard drive, to check that the copy worked OK. If copy was OK, delete these files from the hard drive.

Use Norton Ghost to create an image of the hard drive on a set of CDs.

Check the CD set using Ghost's 'Image Integrity Check' option.

Create a 'Standard Ghost Boot Disk' floppy disk.

Power down computer and swap the hard drive with the spare hard drive.

Boot PC using 'Standard Ghost Boot Disk'.

Restore computer from Ghost image file on the set of CDs.

Then apply SP2 CD from MicroSoft.

If it does not work, I will replace the hard drive with my original drive (XP SP1), try to find out what went wrong, and start again.

A long process, but one that I have used before (W98 to XP, and XP/Fat32 to XP/NTFS), and one that gives me the best (100%) chance of recovery, should anything go wrong.

Thanks Francois

I am not very good with computers and am probably now

sounding like an idiot, but where would these updates that

I downloaded be, to un-install them.

I have checked my download bin and have found the four updates there,

but would that be enough just deleting them??

I don't want to delete or un-install anything important. Some instructions

would be greatly appreciated on what to do.

Thanks very much for all your help.

hi´

what are the update you got?

drivers?

if this is the case ... you have to remember which one was on before ... and try a roolback ...

if not the drivers, well tell me.

you should normally find them in control panel/add or remove programs ...

even drivers, I mean most of them ... just hoping that they are not for the motherboard itself, lile chip, usb or else ...

could you be a bit more precise?

Was watching the BBC's Click Online program last night and saw that they were talking about your problems specifically. You may want to go to the site and watch the clip on the letters and the anwser the program provides. Sorry but I was nodding off and just realized it this morning. :o

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to all your replies

the laptop is taking 10 mins to do everything I request.

Darknight I did what you suggested and the process which

is taking up all my cpu time is;

Kbd.exe at 99% (memory usage 6,216k)

I went to end the process and I had a warning message

stating that I may lose data if I end this process, so I aborted.

Should I go ahead and end this process next time?

Francois I will now check add/remov programs and get back to you.

Thankyou once again

Hello

I killed the process Kbd.exe and everthing worked fine

like you said. When i restarted the computer the same process

was causing the same problems again....so i deleted it again, then

i started having a play around with some of the programs...heres what I found;

One-touch keys don't work

WM Player doesn't work (Message states)... The file wmp.dll has a version

of 9.0.0.3075 where 9.0.0.3128 was expected...media plater not istalled properly.

Try to log onto net (Message states)... Remote computer blocking log on.

FRANCOIS these are the updates I downloaded from compaq which was said I needed;

1. Multimedia keyboard driver update 2.66mb

2. Microsoft media centre auto disconnect utility 698kb

3. Microsoft QFE system restore update 7.53mb (would not install)

4. Windows media centre registry utility 698.kb

I really don't know what is causing all these problems now...just getting more and

more confused. I looked in add/rem programs and nothing stands out like what I have installed.

Can anyone help me please. :o

In the end I contacted Compaq and they have a support team

on the island. They visited and said I had spyware on my computer

and had to re-install XP.

The system restore discs came with my laptop so they took all

this away, and two days later they brought t back with everything

fixed, even saved all my data for me.

I was suprised it only cost me 500 bht. :o

Thanks for all your replies.
