I want to buy a car to get around in. I wont be driving it much only when it is inconvenient to use my motorcycle for shopping or in case of rain etc. i would like it small for parking purposes but would like the 4 seats and in all three cars the rear seats fold down for storage. the choices I see are:

Toyota Yaris

Honda Jazz

Nissan Tiida

any feedback on which you think is best, not counting price. they are all in the same range and I would be buying the one with all the options

I was thinking the yaris would be my choice but someone showed me the Tiida yesterday and that appears to be the nicest of the lot

thanks in advance

Jimmys I can only offer my opinion on the Tiida. It was a car I thought of buying. I rented an automatic a few weeks back and used it for 1,500 KMs. I was disappointed.

The car only had 4,000 kms on the clock. The plastic dashboard trim was rubbing and squeaking. Acceleration in the 80-110 kmh range left a lot to be desired. The back seat passengers complained of the louder than usual road noise.

Apart from that I enjoyed driving it. It was comfortable and handled well with a large boot that easily held 2 medium suitcases.

I've never encountered the Tiida, I can only comment on the Jazz and Yaris:

I drove my friend's tired-ass from BKK to Hua Hin in his Jazz:

1. good acceleration- it will get you pass lots of cars cos its light.

2. top speed at least 160 km/hr. Thats as fast as I got it up to when I had the chance. so it could be faster i don't know.

3. reasonable cargo space in the back.

4. bad view-lateral view is obstructed by the side bars (side window and windshield interface) and the side mirrors are insanely blind.

5. firm-perhaps because my friend's jazz is new, but very minimal vibrations at high speeds.

I drove my colleague's Yaris about 20km to a market:

1. acceleration uncertain because I was in a lot of traffic.

2. less cargo space.

3. very intrusive interior door panels.

4. guages/displays in the center of the dashboard bad idea. For me, visually inconvenient.

5. front side bars worse obstruction than jazz because it is very wide and jutts forward..like looking out a WWII airplane cockpit.

6. I think toyota has tried too hard with the Yaris, they overdid lots of stuff...the body looks like a styled computer mouse...hehe

So, I would take the Jazz, but again I don't know about the Tiida yet at all.

Tiida clearly seems to be the best of the lot, but than after Farma's post. i may think again.. Well since they are all 'budget' cars, sure Farma could say a few bad remarks about the rest of them as well.. i mean comparing to more expencive cars they surely tun out to be more flawed.. if i personally had to choose, Tiida would be my only choice(but than i also think it is a bit more pricey, than the other 2 being Toyota & Honda, they will drive well & accelerate well, i remember taking a Jazz for a test drive once & was very impressed with acceleration, even on a short spin..

Farma, where did you rented Tiida ?! i actually like the interior Very Much, because i'm very tall & Tiida has the highest adjusteable seat of them all ! Waay more comfy for tall guy like me, than even BMW/Fortuner/any Mitsu me thinks !

One thing i would never forego here is sluggish acceleration, which in your case could be due to automatic...but makes me think.. one day i may want 2buy one(sedan only in my case)

update

went to see all three again today

tiida larger and much more comfortable and looked better and new model available 1.6 engine 662,000 & 1.8 engine 793,000. when i sat where i need to be in the front it was very roomy in the back

jazz new model not out till april and this is thailand so who knows when. probally pass on that one since i would like to get a car now

yaris not as nice or comfortable as tiida when i sat where i need to be in the front it was very cramped in the back 1.5 engine 629,000 & 1.5 with options 689,000

have to think about it after reading karms's review. was that this years new model or last years? I like the idea of the larger engine not to race around but to get out of peoples way when i need to. the slightly large car size was good because of interior space. the salesgirl at the tiida said the body steel was a thicker grade which it appeared to be, who really knows. I am not as worried about the price difference but the quality as i will be owning this car till my last days

The Tiida was rented in Australia and as such I expected the build quality to be a bit better. I’ve owned a number of Nissans and never had trims rub and squeak like this in a near new car before.

The adjustable seat is very nice and raises the driving position quite high. Interior size is good and fitted 4 adults comfortably.

Lack of acceleration in the Tiida was my main worry and as pointed out it may be a totally different car with a manual gearbox. The auto appeared to be setup for city driving where it was good and a pleasure to drive.

Out on the open road I would put my foot down to overtake and nothing seemed to happen. It was hard to get it to kick down.

I’ve also driven a new Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus and Mitsubishi Lancer. I liked the Lancer. It was a true pleasure to drive.

I really like the look of the Jazz. It seems to be popular in Thailand as well.

Thanks Farma !! Thats really a very helpful <& worrying 4 me> review ! Coz i was toying with the idea of getting Tiida, since the moment i first sat inside ! Fortunately i still have a relatively new car, with number plate, that i like..

Actually on the second thought, the difference between auto/manual (i prefer manual, but drove a few a/ts) may not turn out to be helpful . As for example Honda can produce very agile a/t cars, as some other brands..

Pity thou, as no other car can get the driver seat that high ! & esp. in Mitsus>Triton,Lancer feel like seating on the floor with my knees stuck up :o

edit for add PS; when i say no other car, i mean thai marketed cars *suppose in EU there's bigger choice for bigger folks

I own a Tiida, and am quite happy with it. I could have gone for the Yaris/Jazz, which are probably a little bit cheaper?

After driving a Toyota Vigo for three years, this car suits my needs. Don't care about resale value as this one if for keeps. True about the reinforced body structure and I love the spacious room inside this car which Jazz/Yaris cannot match!

Downside for some, interior is black ..so I went for the white model! (extra 7,000 Baht) ..got it for free, including rear spoiler, usual freebies.

Has O/d function as well. No probs overtaking/speeding etc...as if I would :o

At the end of the day, each to their own, people swear by Toyota/Honda (resale value) ....Nissan have been around for as long as I can remember and although they are not so 'popular' here, they are are elsewhere!

If you want a car but would want to sell it after a couple of years then Nisssan is not the way to go.

Thanks for your response. I really would like the tiida but wanted to talk to someone who already owned one. Like you it will be for keeps with me and i like the large interior. is yours a 2007 or 08 and is it a 1.6 or 1.8. I want to get the 1.8 2008 and the extras they are giving me are

first class insurance first year

mats

tax

film

underseal

keyless [which comes with the 1.8 anyway.

i will check with the spoiler like you have, they didn't mention it.

Is there anything else i should look out for? did you get and extended warranty? do you have any gripes about the car? I read slow engine & steering response and some vibrations on highway, is this true? I intend to go tomorrow and buy this car after one more look at the yaris and hearing from you.

thanks

Hi.

Just a question, something i have always wondered about - why do such tiny cars come with such large engines?? I mean 1.5 is HUGE for such a city hopper, and then 1.6 and 1.8 even? Why not go all the way and put a 8.6 liter V8 in there?

In my home country those little bugs run around on 1.0 and 1.2 engines, or a 1.2 Diesel. At least they are somewhat economical......

Here, why so obsessed with "displacement"..????

Best regards....

Thanh

(my own car is here ONLY available with 2.0 while in my home country there is 1.4, 1.6, 1.7 Turbo, 1.7 Diesel and 1.8)

Thanh-BKK,

Good question! Back in the U.K too big choice on engines 1.0, 1.2 but here seems that 1.5 is the minimum, only exception was the OLD Toyota Avanza which offered a 1.3, which seemed under-powered to me for a 7 seater. There again I'm juat a woman, what do I know about cars? :D:o

The jazz loses power very quickly. If you don't change from standard tires and wheels it is very uncomfortable at over 120 km/h. Tops out at about 140 km/h with the i-dsi engine and after a new intake/exhaust system only 160 km/h and has a lot of trouble getting there.

It gets good mileage and has comfortable back seats and I'm, 6'1".

Jimmys,

What did you end up buying? Sorry, saw your post perhaps too late, but whatever you chose, be happy with it! You had your reasons! :o

Thanks to everyone who helped.

I wanted the tiida but didn't get it for two reasons. 1. 750,000 baht for the cheaper model [really high when i change from dollars to baht] and it was longer than jazz and yaris. the reason i am getting a compact is for tight parking spaces

I was undecided about the jazz and the yaris. i finally decided on the jazz even though the new model will not be available till April. they cant give any details on options or price yet which was a bit uncomfortable to put down a deposit [negates any negotiating when price comes out] on my way driving to the Honda dealer I saw a 1.5 E yaris in my preferred color [metallic black] parked outside a used car dealer. out of curiosity i stopped and it was a 2007 with 7,400 kilometers and in perfect condition [could have been sitting in the showroom and not known it was used]. it had dual airbags and front disc/abs brakes which was a priority for me. only drawback was it didnt have the 60/40 fold down seats which wasn't a deal breaker. A Thai lady brought it new on credit in august 2007 and didn't make the first payment. negotiated it for 555,000 baht including all fees and first class insurance till august. Just couldnt pass it up. I pick it up on Monday. drives like a dream with plenty of power and a 4.7 meter turning radius.

thanks for all your help

Apparently the vtec jazz can be pushed to around 190km/h, based on reports from other owners in other forums. It's just too small to be safe at those kinds of speeds unless it's got some modifications to brakes suspension.
