I'm going cheap on RAM because its strangely over-priced in Thailand. This should hold me over until next December when I visit home to USA.

Of all the things to cut back on, RAM is absolutely NOT the one you should cut back on - particularly when the difference in price between here and the US is a few bucks. What you're going to end up with is a Ferrari with a 1 liter gas tank.

Pretty good specs. I'm a bit confused as to the intended use of this computer. Is its role going to be a gaming computer, email station, or a workstation? I DO understand the desire to run three monitors, and if one is going to be a 2560x1600, you've got money to burn. Having said that, I would definitely get another hard drive and RAID 1 them for peace of mind.

Oh, and stay away from Vista; it significantly lags behind XP except in security.

good point about the ram. i found this, which looks like a decent deal.

Reaper X 4GB 1000MHz (2GBx2) 5-5-5-15
5,300

this will be a work station, only light gaming. I have a second drive already.

If that is the same as this, yeah, that's some 26% more expensive than buying it in the States. If you're going to go with 4 GB, you know you're going to lose quite a bit of that running a 32 bit OS, right?

links are good!

LOL - that is definitely not standard memory!

As I recall, decent 2GB memory shouldn't be too expensive, though I haven't checked prices lately. If you are not going to do any serious gaming, there is no point going overboard in this department - simply buy decent RAM and you'll be fine and glad you didn't waste the money on high-end RAM which is not going to improve anything that you do.

What Dave says is also correct - some of that 4GB will be completely wasted anyhow, unless you move to Vista 64-bit. If you're going to run XP, 2x1GB will be more than plenty for your needs, and frankly it's enough for my Vista 32-bit as well, as long as SP1 is installed.

On my 8600GT has 2x DVI and a VGA so = can run 3 monitors [believe the 8500 only has 1x DVI and 1x VGA]
Has it? I thought the outputs were 2 DVI +S-Video? Are there any affordable cards offering 3 {DVI VGA mix}

Regards

Well mine Asus Silent 8600GT has 2x DVI and a VGA, and I have 1x monitor old LCD 19" has NO DVI and is connected with the VGA cable, the newer 20" LCD has DVI so is connected via the DVI cable.

^ Curious, looking today in Fortune, there were only 2 * DVI {with 1 DVI to VGA converter if required} + S-Video. This may be a case similar to the Benq 22" screens where the first release here had both DVI & VGA ports and all subsequent shipments and those available now {labelled a} only have VGA.

Regards

Where did you get yours? If this is a versioning thing {serial/verson number?} I'd like to find a 3 full computer port card {DVI & or VGA}, since I only know of Matrox and ATI's at 500 USD+ a pop.

I'm just about to do my first build with the same board and cpu (if I've got the specs right!)

ASUS "P5K-E/WiFi-AP" Intel P35 Chipset Mainboard for Intel LGA 775 CPU

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 1066FSB 8MB L2 Cache EM64T LGA 775 Quad Core

Do you know a reputable supplier (perhaps in Panthip?).

Any advise about PSU brands available in BKK would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I went and took care of it today. I used these guys

http://www.busitek.com/forms/pricelist.html

They were 100% professional and did not try to sell me anything or hustle me in anyway. I went into the store, gave them the list of things I wanted and came back in an hour. They started windows and showed me that everything was installed, put everything everything in a bag for me and even carried it down the taxi stand. A very positive experience. When they did not have the motherboard I wanted they suggested I wait for another day or buy one at another shop - I was pretty surprised to be honest! Normally it would have been -buy this one or pay a deposit now, etc. A very nice bunch in that shop.

As for power supply, you can click that link or just walk around Pantip. They have many of the popular brands in the USA, but like everything else expect to pay about 25% more than you would on www.newegg.com

I went E8400 instead of Q6600..

The 8400 is 1333 FSB and 6MB cache.. 2 cores of 3ghz.. Should run lower temp ??

Many apps not fully using those quad cores yet.. And many benches I have seen came out better on the faster duo than the quad. Plus its cheaper.

I think the Q6600 (if you get the right processor revision) OC's very easy.. I dont intend to go that route so..
