Sukhomvit New Multi Lane Overpass

Construction work on the new Pattaya-Chonburi motorway has now reached North Pattaya, where the foundations are being laid for the supports that will carry the overpass, but land appropriation on other parts of the project is taking longer than planned and the highway will not now be completed by its target date of May.

The motorway is being built under a budget of 2 billion baht, agreed by the national government in 2006.

Following the route of the old National Highway No 7 between Chonburi and Pattaya, the motorway construction has been divided into four phases. Phase 1 and Phase 2 are for the stretch from the Chonburi Bypass beginning at the kilometer 4 + 100 mark and ending at the kilometer 42 + 400 mark at the Regents School Pattaya Junction, a total distance of 38.30 km. Four lanes each 3.50 meters wide are being added to the existing road, and it is now estimated the work will be ready by this August.

Phases 3 and 4 are being built under a budget of 585 million baht, and work started in December 2005. A reinforced concrete road with four lanes each 2.70 meters wide is being built from Intersection No 36 to Sukhumvit Road between North and Central Pattaya, for a distance of approximately 7.7 km. There are also two intersections that will connect to the local Pattaya roads near the Pattaya wastewater plant and Chaiyapornwithee Road.

Current work includes the construction of the piers that will carry the overpass near the North Pattaya Sukhumvit Intersection. The east side of the motorway will continue on the left to Central Pattaya, while travelers bound for North Pattaya will turn off at junction traffic lights under this overpass.

From pattaya mail Friday February 15, now we all know that this paper is usually late with the news, but if you travel up this road from Klang to Naklua, you can't miss the development, but if you look at this work you will see footings for concrete supports for a big road above. Now this means that this will give Naklua the appearance of BKK, with a road in the sky!

Also it means traffic will be dumped just before Siam country club road. I just thought you citizens might like to know this.

I include a construction plan from the said periodical.

So that is what the overpass being built on Soi Chayapornviti is for. Just near by there is a stretch of road work about 150m long that seems to only be good for a model aircraft runway, it is too short even for the "boy racers".

Will the bypass connect with the train station mooted for the far end of Soi Siam Country Club? Part of the fables BKK- Eastern Seaboard fast train system. It is a mega-project just waiting for signature or two. Then they can get back to the serious work of digging out Lake Mabprachan to supply the sand/dirt for the construction.

Too right! If the foundations are now being dug for the first piers, then the work will still be going on at the beginning of April, taking into account the cure time before further concrete can be poured. Then the piers will take the rest of April (at least) and then, even if the basic deck is precast and hoisted into place, there is still a final set of pours - usually each of deck and parapet - plus casting in the sliding bearings and apron/abutment expansion joints. Then asphalt surfacing - so look at August before you can drive over it.

Provided the approaches are completed.

And that would be with me driving the project. Maybe August next year with some of the work I've seen on the highways.

May, but which year, or even which decade?

The new highway will be on ground level, soi Chayapornviti will go over the highway (a two lane bridge is cheaper then bringing the 4 lane highway over the existing road).

Good point Monty!
