So Who Still Plays Football?

Well as we all love that game. It would be interesting to see who still plays. I know Spit The Dog and Sunderland play. Scousemouse is not a bad player. He trains the kids at school since i left and he used to help me before. I played in the casual league for a couple of seasons. I won a couple of indoor 5's comps and helped the TV team win the Global soccer nines . I still play 5's once a week in Sydney. Also this will be my second seasoon playing for Coogee United. Though this year i will be running the team as well as playing. So who else still plays regularly? Just curious. :o

Played and won a great game of table football in a hotel in Ayutthaya a couple of weeks back. :o

I think that part of the secret of my overwhelming success is playing like a rugby line-out, it's how you angle the ball when putting it into play. Don't know when I'll be playing next though. She'd probably get the hang of it too quickly anyway. :D

I am very good at dribbling at my age :D

But alas I have not been able to play since my career was cut short with a broken knee sustained in a match when I was 15, and yes lace-up footballs were around then :o

So did you have the old wooden studs as well TP?

From what my old man was saying, thos lace up balls were lethal, especally when it was raining as they used to soak up the water, and thus got heavier. Heading the ball on the lace was not a nice experience according to him.

So I take it that you have never experienced the thrill of playing schoolboy football on a wet, cold Wednesday afternoon? The woolen jersey that fitted you perfectly is now a few pounds heavier and has stretched down to your knees. The old leather 'casey' is now heavier than a medicine ball and every time you head it the laces are tattooed on your forehead. The feeling of worn leather studs (with the nails exposed) running down your shin after a hard tackle. You've not lived!

Thankfully Mr Hippo, I'm not old enough to have experienced those joys, although certainly the cold weather, sleet, wind and hail haven't changed so much.

The last time I saw Sunderland (the forum member, not the team) play football was just before Christmas against the Japanese. His right football boot burst open midway through the first half and he had to play the rest of the game in a pair of grey hiking shoes. Funnily enough, it was one of the best games that I've ever seen him play.

Since then then skinflint mackem hasn't played as rumour has it he doesn't want to spend 2000 Baht on a new pair of boots. Either that or he too busy competing in the Supali Squash League with Mr. Toad. :D

I retired at the grand age of 16 after playing county football (South Northumberland) and for Whitley Bay boys club, i was similar to George Best in that it was the women, drinking and drugs that steered me away from a promising career.

Now i just like to sit in the pub telling people that never knew me back then how great i was at football, and that i could have been a star.

2,000 baht for new boots? I'll wait for the rag and bone man to come down our soi and buy some off him!!

Yes, I am in temporary retirement until after my wedding. The fear of a broken neck handed down by the missus is greater than the fear of a broken leg.

I shall be back fear not. In the meantime the Supalai Squash League reaches its climax this Tuesday with the mighty Mr. Toad competing against Sunderland, Skippy The Kangaroo and the Welsh-Scouser.

BTW we won 6-0

We ended up not playing the AA3's but a combination of the AA1's , 2's and 7's. We are the 6's. So not a bad result. Got another friendly lined up for next week. This week was the first time i got to see some of the new players. Basically we were the 5's last year but our manager decided he wasn't doing it this year. So it was left late to get a team in to the 5's so i took it over and we merged with some of last years 7's. But their better player plus my better players. We are in the 6's this year but could easilly play up to the 3's or 4's. Bring on the new season. Though i have busted my ribs i think! In a bit of pain.

Mr. Toad's handicaps and disabilities aside, he was able to take one game off eventual winner Skippy the Kangaroo, thus enabling him to avoid qualification for the Joey Deacon Memorial Cup.

Yep, an injured foot and back, meant that Mr Toad was struggling for most of the evening. Today in a great deal of pain, my back was as stiff as a dick in Lolittas this morning, but will soldier on. Might go and have a cheeky beer after work to ease the pain.

On to the football, think I might mae a comeback this year, now old enough to qualify for Veterans football. :D
