Somerset (part of the Asian chain) has units in Holborn but they are expensive - google Somerset apartments for pricing and location. Otherwise not aware of any other options.

There's no good value accommodation in London... Unless you can claim rent back as a business expense like I do anyway...

London IS expensive - especially Central London.... (Many people live out in Zones 3 & 4 and commute in via Rail/Tube system. Rush hours can be jammed! I don't miss em!). :o

You could check out Loot:-

http://www.loot.com/property

This is what Londoners and others use to find property to rent/flat/house share etc.

Not sure what the minimum rental contract would be but you might find estate agents listed that you can follow up with....

Good luck!

Depending on your employment arrangements, you may be able to claim a big chunk of your rent as a business expense.. In my case it is up to £950 a month. Outside London it's £850pm.

if you aren't being paid enough to cover expensive london accomadation - best bet is to simply share.

http://www.gumtree.com/ is probably the best site for people moving to the UK and are on more realistic budgets.

be like those dodgy Aussies....and sleep 4 to a room in a nice area like Brixton.

It may be really horrid....but it is better than living in Australia.

I'm Australian. That's why I get £950 a month towards my rent as a tax deduction and get to fly home twice a year (via Thailand for 2 weeks) on business class and get the fare back.

Overpaid and Over There, sounds like a good deal - so tell us, how is Brixton these days? BTW, that's "in" Business Class!

It's difficult to find a flat in central London IMO. GirlX do you know what area you will be working in so we can offer better advice? I would go for Chiswick, Hammersmith, Shepherds Bush, West Kensington, Ravenscourt Park, Turnham Green or Islington for ease of travel to all destinations and a good cultural/mixed social life in the evenings with reasonably priced accommodation. The southern (south of the river) alternatives would be Clapham and Putney. Let us know if you need any more advice

Actually E1 is a very good choice, hackney & the surrounding areas are the new up & coming places in London & all the hippest people are coming from/living in this area. The west end is over priced & dead for accom, hammersmith is full of aussies/ZA & Kiwi backpackers but East london is where all the real londoners are. The prices aren't silly either yet & commuting is very easy with the new jubilee line extension taking place & bus/overground routes running. Takes approx 10 minutes to get from Bow to Liverpool Street (financial district) & another 20-30mins to get to the west end.

£500+ return flight

£500+ key money for accomodation

£1000+ per month living expenses

That's without having a life.

3 months work would have to pay well.

Living in Canary Wharf, I would second East London. E1, E14 (Isle of Dogs only, I wouldn't go anywhere above that) and perhaps Canada Water aren't a bad place to live. Canada Water is probably more reasonably priced than Canary Wharf and you can get Jubilee Line into the City quite easily.

I used to live in Canary Wharf, not a bad part of the world. Actually it is quite nice. Good transport links with the Jubilee line and the Docklands light rail. You even have the river taxi to central london.

Easy access to Greenwich, walking under the Thames from the Isle of Dogs. Greenwich is lovely in summer.

You've got Canary Wharf itself, with most things you need. A Waitrose if you are being paid VERY well. ASDA a bit down the way if not.

Lots of shared accomadation in the area too. We rented a 2 BR semi-detatched on Westferry Rd for 960 pounds per month in 2004-2005.

If sharing, you'd need about 500 pounds per month, for a private room in a shared place. Double it if you want a whole place to yourself. 50 per week for groceries. You can't walk out the door in London and not spend 20 pounds (1400 baht). About 20 pounds per week for a zone one or two tube pass. Need at least 2000 pounds per month in income, just to get by.

I work in Canary Wharf, but live in W2.. Was looking at moving to Silvertown where I can get a really nice flat for the same as my little studio, but the area is really dead..

Depending on what the OP does and how her finances are arranged, she'll possibly get most of her costs back..

I get £950 a month rent back.

£112.5 subsistence.

All work related travel (naturally a weekly travelcard)

2 flights to Aust a year

Council tax & energy bills

all repaid to me as tax deductions... Actually, I probably don't get it all back as it would be more than the tax I would be elligible to pay..

The locals I work with (permanent staff) would likely take home less than half..
