Hi all,

I really need help on this one. My missus bought some land south of Bangkok. We want to start a banana plantation, the problme is, we don't know where to buy young trees or rather where to get a list of agricultural companies that sell decent young banana trees that eventually produce bananas similar in taste to the "Dole" bananas found at Tops supermarkets in Bangkok. Would it be worth it to contact the Thai Ministry of Agriculture? Advice/suggestions much appreciated.

I know nothing about bananas, but I always thought that the Dole bananas were imported. Have you looked into whether or not that variety can be grown in Thailand? I wonder why almost all bananas here are of the lady finger variety. I think most people would agree that the Dole bananas are far better. Good luck.

Banana, the bananas you are refering to are called "guay hom"( banana smell good ). They are grown all over Thailand and can be bought at most nurserys. I just went to a neighbors and dug up some of his. They send up shoots that become new trees. They multiply like crazy and soon you will be digging up shoots and throwing them away! Did you know, after you harvest a bunch of bananas, you chop the tree down? Good luck, Ta Tom

The so called "Glouy Hom" or the dole bananas should be easily found in "Kampaeng Phet", a province in the north which is famous for all its glouy hom.So check it out over there if you're very serious with the plantation.I like the glouy hom candies..they're bloody yumm.

Apparently there are 28 different varieties of banana that grow in Thailand. One of those useless facts that you seem to remember. Can't think bananas would be imported, it wouldn't make economic sense. I think the really small ones are really cute.
