LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger only survived an assassination attempt by Hells Angels members nearly 40 years ago because a boat carrying his would-be killers was swamped in a storm, according to a new BBC documentary.

The details of a plot to kill the British rocker were revealed by an FBI agent as part of a series, "The FBI at 100," which is to be aired on BBC Radio 4 on Monday.

Tom Mangold, who presents the series, told Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper that Jagger fell out with the Hells Angels after a member of the notorious gang killed a fan during the band's infamous free concert at Altamont in 1969.

The Stones had hired the local chapter to provide security for the poorly planned concert near San Francisco. The bikers terrorized the crowd, and were offended by Jagger's effeminate dancing. One of them stabbed 18-year-old Meredith Hunter to death in front of the stage. The chaos was immortalized in the documentary "Gimme Shelter."

The Hells Angels felt they had been duped by Jagger as fingers were pointed in the aftermath of the concert. Former special agent Mark Young, who was interviewed for the BBC series, said a boatload of Hells Angels set out to take revenge on Jagger at his holiday home in the Hamptons, near New York City.

"The Hells Angels were so angered by Jagger's treatment of them that they decided to kill him," Mangold told the newspaper.

"They planned the attack from the sea so they could enter his property from the garden and avoid security at the front. The boat was hit by a storm and all of the men were thrown overboard. All survived and there was not said to have been any further attempt on Jagger's life."

Alan Passaro was arrested and tried for Hunter's murder in 1972 but was acquitted after a jury concluded that he had acted in self-defense because Hunter was carrying a handgun. Passaro later drowned in an accident.

Jagger 'escaped gang murder plot'

Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger escaped an assassination attempt at the hands of Hells Angels in 1969, a BBC Radio 4 documentary has claimed.

A former FBI agent told The FBI at 100 series the gang tried to reach Jagger's home in Long Island, New York, by sea, but a storm almost sank their boat.

He said the singer had become a target in a dispute over security at concerts.

Presenter Tom Mangold said the FBI, who only learned of the plot afterwards, regarded it as a "serious attempt".

It is not clear whether Jagger was informed of the plot and his spokesman declined to comment.

They were going to kill him in retribution for his firing their security forces

Mark Young - Former FBI agent

The row with the gang began after the death of a teenage fan at a free gig at Altamont Speedway in California.

The Hells Angels were hired by Jagger to work as security at the concert, but were subsequently fired after the incident.

"They were going to kill him in retribution for his firing their security forces," former FBI agent Mark Young told the documentary.

"Their plan involved making entry onto his Long Island property, going by boat.

"As they gathered the weaponry and their forces to go out on Long Island Sound, a storm rolled up, which nearly sunk the watercraft that they were in, and they escaped with their own lives.

"They never went back and reinstituted the plan."

The programme will be broadcast on 11 March at 1545 GMT.

Jagger was lucky - Meredith Hunter wasn't so lucky -

If anyone's watched the Gimme Shelter documentary that records the events at Altamont Speedway - then they will realise that the Hells Angels were totally out of control that day and hel_l bent on causing and provoking one violent confrontation after another with peaceful concert-goers.

Many concert-goers that day were beaten-up by the angels for no reason whatsoever - and yet - knowing this - the Stones still decided to play. It was an incendary situation. And violence was very much in the air that day.

There is slow motion film of the murderous attack on Meredith Hunter by one of the Hells Angels. The Hells Angel in question goes at him with a raised knife over his head like a bat out of hel_l.

The Angel had perhaps glimpsed a gun - and I guess - in his small infantile world - this was reason enough to snuff the coloured guy out - whether the black guy was any real threat or not.

I agree, the hel_l's Angels were out of control on that day and attacked wven musicians on stage.

However, the way I saw that killing scene, Hunter was wielding the gun before the hel_l's Angel attacked him - and that is self-defense.
