There used to be a 500 baht departure tax collected ( in baht ) but it is now included in ones airticket.

There is no such charge and never has been.

True ^^^ assuming our OP is travelling on a British passport. Could he be thinking of the 'visa on arrival' for those from the sub-continent and other places?

Indonesia, US$10 on arrival, though they will accept other currencies.

For a short stay, but US$25 for longer.

I wonder if the OP is thinking of Cambodia, not Thailand

Or Burma... that's $5 not crinkled or crushed

Myanmar/Burma requires USD$10 or the equivalent FEC 10 (Foreign Exchange Certificate) for DEPARTURES only - there is no charge for arrival. and yes, the notes should be clean, untorn, and unmarked when exchanging or purchasing with USD but believe me they'll take anything when you're on your way out - as I have told them before, 'its those ten sad torn USD$1 notes or nothing - your choice!' :D

makes sense - $10 to get a 'visa on arrival' for Cambodia.

OP either scammed or confused about which country they were arriving in to on xmas day - too much "Christmas Cheer" or "Festive Spirit(s)" perhaps?? :o
