There are rumors that Las Vegas choreographers have been spotted at Tiffany's in Pattaya to see what they will have to work with. Tom Jones Live in Thailand?

Agreed on the education gig. However, there is a line of thought that as the little bleeders are going to gamblle anyway and there is no feasable way to stop them; allowing the establishments to be built on Thai soil will bring in gazillions in extra tax revenue, which can be used at home rather than giving it to your neighbour.

According to the locals on Koh Larn, the huge building with a roof that looks like a manta ray is going to be a casino....?

I went there in July and the beach (Samae) was empty, 2 months later you cant move for restaurants and vendors on the now gated beach. Costa Del Yuk!

I once read an interview with a guy who was a Senator at the time who had made his money from illegal casinos here in Bangkok. "Chat Taopoon" (Mr Nail) was his nickname, probably because he is hard as nails. a real mafiosi figure, but very candid during the interview. He said that gambling in the Kingdom should be legalized, because Thais are probably the world's biggest, most degenerate gamblers. Himself included.

Tried to find the original article. Only found this

its coming for sure, and sooner rather than latter i think!

I disagree.

Even Thaksin (I mean himself) at the peak of his power (2001-2004) didn't manage to do it...

On a technical level, of course Thailand should create casinos, to attract the tourists (think about China !), kill the gambling mafia, and send huge amounts of money into state coffers....

But the country is so conservative, so stupidely conservative and bigot, and has so many underground interests linked to "official interests".... that the pope will eat som tam before we will have any Las Vegas in Bangkok.

From what I have heard a certain VVVIP is against it and it will not happen in his lifetime. But after he's unfortunately no longer with us then it will become legal and Thaksin will have his casino on Koh Chang.

i am only living since three years in Thailand but my wife and me have spent holidays here for more than a quarter century. based on that information i conclude that less than 5% of all announced innovations/plans were implemented.

Casinos? Vegas? ...give me a break! :o

I've just asked my wife, and she says gamblings already here. She should know she goes playin cards every day. Lucky for me she is good at it. :o

This is a tough one! Yes Thais gamble, every nation, legal or not, will have gamblers. However, what would a casino do? Would it only attract farangs or would the already 'poor' Thais go?

Although I never gamble and have never even been in a casino, if people want to gamble shouldn't they be allowed to make that choice?

In Thailand NO as they have had zero education in many cases, Thaksin bought all of Issan by giving them cheap loans to buy farm equipment to improve their life what did many do??? NEW CAR which they now cant afford the payments on !!

I think you both should realize that the current plan is to charge a 100,000 baht entrance fee for Thais... that should answer both of your questions...

This is a prime example of where a government needs to make a choice between money raised from a vice and the inevitable negative impact on society of promoting that will have.

The heart of the argument is morals in public policy - The moral argument recently won through in the UK and has until now been up front here in Thailand.

I for one hope it continues to do so.

right now gambling is illegal in thailand and there is.... tons of illegal gambling.

if they make gambling legal, there will be.... tons of legal gambling.

the only thing that will change is who profits off of it.

I'm neutral about the thought.

But since I dont gamble, I'm just afraid about more criminal activities.

Right now, there's too much gambler-criminals and with a legal gambling casino, Thailand's morality will go downhill.

Perhaps, what will the monks say?

Thailand To Legalize Gambling

Bangkok Post EDITORIAL

If casinos win, we all lose

We have enough problems to cope with already. Littering the country with "untouchable" gambling joints would only make them worse.

I for one hope and pray that it is shot down again, Thailand has enough problems as it is. :D:D:D

Your post pre-dates the main Bangkok Post Editorial today. :o

Are you on the Editorial Board per chance? :D:D

Wish it was possible to merge these threads or preferably have people that post in these General Forum thread spin-offs of News Clipping Forum threads to have their posting done there.

There's lots of good comments here and the added dimension of varied posters in News Clipping would be most welcome.

Sorry for metioning Morals..

I thought a number of casinos had already been approved for the UK.

The super casino idea had been scrapped - which would have been unlimited stakes.

There have been some projects approved which still consist of very large casino complexes.

I am not in agreement with gambling in anyway, but I can see it happening here, it is pretty indicative of the way society is changing everywhere.

Just what Thailand really needs, <deleted> educating the public after all I dont know a single Thai already in debt??? Talk about getting your policies worked out!!

Do you really believe it is the role of government to use force (jail, guns) to tell people what is best for them? That is a really repugnant concept, that one person/being (king/government) knows what's best for 60 million people and will use force to push their views on them.

And, further to that, do you know one American who isn't in debt? In fact, the great majority of Americans are bankrupt... especially when you add up all the debt owed on municipal, state and federal levels. It works out to about $300,000 per person... so a family of four is in debt to over a million.

Yet, you see some thai people who owe $500 to someone and get angry that now their economy is going to increase dramatically because a bunch of tourists are going to want to come to Thailand to play some blackjack?

Your thought process is very, very deluded.

I bet you it isn’t.

Give you ten to one odds that it doesn’t happen.

No, no, on a serious note, this is Thailand, once it has been officially suggested that gambling is going to be legalized, that means money has already changed hands, permits has already been issued.

It was the same for the Tesco Lotus saga. When local traders protested against the opening of too many stores, it made no difference.

Too much money to be made for the benefit of the fat cats with legalized gambling. Mafia and Government officials involved.

It’s not coming to happen, because it is here already.
