Does anyone know what a frequent flyer point is worth in US dollars? And why do the airlines not refund this money as your bonus for flying with them? I knew a frequent flyer who had 600000 ff points when Ansett collapsed in Australia,

he never received a cent.

I don't think they have an actual cash value unless required by country law or actually given a value by the airline. In the UK trading stamps (which ff miles are a variation of) are worth .001p each as a cash value is required by law.

600,000 would net you a whole 6 Quid :o

So you would have to earn a lot of ff points to get a AUD1000 ticket then, you would have to be flying just about continuously all year round, one thinks they may be just a marketing gimmick to get you in.

Same same every time I go to a supermarket in Australia I am asked if I have "flybuys", I reply by saying I came by motor.

Staff claim they have to ask every customer this question.

Like trading stamps, the "gift" redemption value (against flights) is considerably greater than the "cash" redemption value (required by law).

The number of miles needed to get a free flight would be worth only a few cents in cash, in other words, there is no cash alternative.

Although airlines do list FF points as a liabilty of fiscal statements. So there is a cash value to them, as to what the figure is, it would vary from airlines to airline.

Qantas is considering selling off it's FF program, so there must be money to be made in them.

I fly gulf air and the air miles program is very good. It took me no time at all to get upgraded to the "silver" level of frequent flyer status. That means i don't queue at the check in but go straight to business/first class. When i have checked in i go to the business class lounge even though i only fly economy. That means free food, free drinks and free internet. I have also had 3 free upgrades to business class without using any air miles. Hardly a sales gimmick!
