Well, MSG is part of your food chain - the moment you use a stock cube or any of the above mentioned, but the hype of it being bad for you is based on totally wrong facts - Glutamate is contained in just about every food item and if it wasn't, it wouldn't taste good. Initially Glutamate was derived from seeweat by the Japanese see also http://lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk/food/s...1614469,00.html - Thai food by the way, contains a LOT of MSG. People who think they are allergic to it, have eaten it nearly every day without knowing and only develop any headaches if they are told. Well, there may be the odd case of someone who is really allergic to Glutamate but than they can't eat any normal food because its part of most natural food.

Its usually decribed as "Yeast" extract on the packaging.

We do not add it in our products because its already there naturally and by making sausages with lots of meat instead of water, we do not need to add MSG. The same with our ready cooked meals in Jars, we make our own stock with bones as one used to do and some top restaurants still do. It enhances the naturally occuring glutamate and creates the "unami" or meaty flavor. So does slow roasting.

By the way, if you would read the scientific names of most food items, herbs and spices, they sound scary. How about 5-(2,4-dioxymethylene-phenyl)-hexa-2,4-dienoic acid (piperinic acid) with azinane - the part of black pepper that gives it the punch or S. officinalis ssp. minor) contains mostly thujone (35 to 60%), 1,8-cineol (15%), camphor (18%), borneol (16%), bornyl esters, α-pinene and salvene for your sage in your sausages - Monosodium is SALT

This comes from a topic in Western food, but most people will never see it there. So many people believe all the BS about MSG that I wanted to give it more of an audience. I hope that the mods don't mind.

Got shares in an MSG factory, UG? :o

Everything in moderation - MSG, salt, beer, women....

This week I saw marmite flavored rice cakes on the Tesco shelves. Not in a million years, MSG or no MSG.

I have two points to make on this.

1. If I don't want something put in my food, then I don't want it in my food period. It's not for some industrial food chemist or some idiot with a food stall to decide for me what is best for me.

2. Fresh food tastes great without adding MSG (the reason why Industrial Food Chemists and Idiots with food stalls put MSG in the food they sell is to fool people into believing the cheaper and less fresh ingreadiants they are using are up to the mark).

MSG as used by Thai 'food' vendors is to hide the fact that they use old/bad quality ingredience.

As said by guesthouse, good, fresh food requires no flavour enhancement.

Exactly how I feel - although in my younger days, I couldn't control myself when it came to women, but they controlled me pretty well. :o

They're lovely! My dear, sainted mother sent me some in my latest parcel from Blighty. But then, I do love Marmite and so, presumably, must've been eating MSG for donkey's years. And it ain't never done me no harm!! :o

actually i think the Thais add it out of habit whether or not their food is fresh

i will not say why i think this :o

i hate MSG and firmly believe i am better off without it

and yes i THINK i AM allergic to it

but no headaches

from experience its one or all of these:

MSG, the fresh squeezed OJ, and some shrimp

itchy palms and itchy feet/ankles

which disappears when i go back to the states

and when i do not ingest these things

what else could it be causing this malady??? :D

as there is no need for w**king in LOS :D

I only know i have forgotten to tell the waitress NO Pong chu root after I have the headache, so certainly in certain doeses it does affect me.

HIDDEN SOURCES

OF PROCESSED FREE GLUTAMIC ACID (MSG)

NAMES OF INGREDIENTS THAT CONTAIN ENOUGH MSG

TO SERVE AS COMMON MSG-REACTION TRIGGERS

The MSG-reaction is a reaction to free glutamic acid that occurs in food as a consequence of manufacture. MSG-sensitive people do not react to protein (which contains bound glutamic acid) or any of the minute amounts of free glutamic acid that might be found in unadulterated, unfermented, food.

These ALWAYS contain MSG

Glutamate Glutamic acid Gelatin

Monosodium glutamate Calcium caseinate Textured protein

Monopotassium glutamate Sodium caseinate Yeast nutrient

Yeast extract Yeast food Autolyzed yeast

Hydrolyzed protein

(any protein that is hydrolyzed) Hydrolyzed corn gluten Natrium glutamate (natrium is Latin/German for sodium)

These OFTEN contain MSG or create MSG during processing Carrageenan Maltodextrin Malt extract

Natural pork flavoring Citric acid Malt flavoring

Bouillon and Broth Natural chicken flavoring Soy protein isolate

Natural beef flavoring Ultra-pasteurized Soy sauce

Stock Barley malt Soy sauce extract

Whey protein concentrate Pectin Soy protein

Whey protein Protease Soy protein concentrate

The girlfreind & i decided not to use MSG whilst we were living,& cooking in Chiang mai for 3 months.

I have to say though that noodle soup without MSG is just not as tasty.

What about fish sauce in los, does it also contain MSG.Prik nam plaa, lovely.

Salt & beer are also toxic,so i suppose its just how much we are talking about.

Fresh ingredients dont make it taste beter, MSG does.

Fresh ingredients vs not so fresh with MGS = Not so fresh with MSG wins hands down still

I tend to agree they put it in fresh food too and for reason it makes some dishes taste better. When my (now) wife first came to the UK for a visit she brought with her a heap of spices and other stuff including this white stuff the looked a bit like salt. When she did some cooking she asked me to have a taste and it was a bit bland, so she gets out the magic white stuff puts it in and bugger me it tasted so much nicer. Now the label being in Thai I had no idea what it was, until I saw a Thai grocery website which had the same stuff, labeled as MSG.

I asked her if she had heard that some people have a reaction to it and it was news to her, she reckoned it was as common as salt in all Thai cooking and was just accepted as being normal. Sometimes I wonder if we in the west worry about things too much, sometimes it is best not to know what is in something.

What's wrong with them.

Remember "Twiglets", had marmite on them, scrumptious.

After eating pies etc on several occasions, and on another occasion, the chinese neighbour's cooking, which both, probably, contained MSG,there seems to be a facial expression indicating mental illnesssad.gif, when waking up on the next day or two, and which is FELT also as the same feeling on the facesad.gif.

And so a feeling of ugly tension,and/or tiredness physically and mentally,a type of mental illness,or disturbanceannoyed.gif.

The similar sad, mentally ill annoyed.giffeeling, and behaving so, that happens also after smoking dope.

Very strange and unpleasant effects.

No more MSG thanks.

Damaged or killed brain cells, from the excitotoxin?Probably.

Brain cells excited to the point of mental illness?

Brain cells, and all bodily cells, excited to the point of fatigue?

Or a combination of the effects of grains, transfats etc and MSG?

Unfortunately,no photos/images of the facial effects, which might not show up on screen anyway, due to being maybe not obvious enough for a camera to record.

Search mercola and his msg newsletter.

In the Mercola website links, scroll down to the lists of ingredients which have hidden MSG.

Also when loading the links, click on the 'X' to stop the page fully loading,so as to avoid the popup subscription which often appears to cover the page.

Reply with your experiences with loading the links.

Synthetic MSG might be a lot worse than natural MSG,maybe because of synthetic amounts added,and/or synthetic types.
